For sale are new Glitch Works GW-48T02-1 NVRAM replacement modules. These modules are constructed from recycled Mostek/ST MK48T02 NVRAMs and retain complete compatibility with older parts -- newer ST MK48T02 parts have slightly different specifications and will not function in some older equipment, such as Sun SPARCstation machines in the sun4c family. These rebuilds retain the functionality of the original MK48T02 since they're built with original MK48T02 ICs.
This project is Open Source Hardware. The design files are linked in the project description page, linked below
The GW-48T02-1 is about the same size as original MK48T02 modules and will not cause height interference issues in systems that place mezzanine boards above the NVRAM module. The second image shows the module installed in a Sun SPARCstation IPX (not included). If your machine uses an AMP extraction carrier, the GW-48T02-1 will fit inside, unlike modern ST replacement parts.
These modules are built from a recycled MK48T02 and a small rework board, which holds a 32.768 KHz crystal and CR1225 battery in a coin cell holder. Rather than requiring replacement or another rebuild when the battery dies, the battery can be removed and replaced with any standard CR1225 coin cell. The rework board is attached to the MK48T02 IC with two-part epoxy.
The GW-48T02-1 was designed for repair and maintenance of sun4c family Sun SPARCstation computers, but can be used in any older equipment that requires a MK48T02. You can read about the development of the GW-48T02-1 and the process through which MK48T02s are recycled on our site.
These modules are unprogrammed, if you need to reprogram the NVRAM in your Sun system, you can find a link to the Sun NVRAM FAQ in the writeup on our site, which covers the process stey-by-step.
DO NOTE: these modules make use of a primary lithium cell and will be marked as such for shipping. Modules shipped to US addresses will come with the CR1225 cell uninstalled to limit battery drain while not in use. Due to USPS regulations, modules shipped to international addresses must be shipped with the CR1225 installed in the GW-48T02-1. If you will be storing the GW-48T02-1 for a long period before using it, it is recommended to remove the CR1225 and store it separately to limit discharge.
