What is it?

The OpenChronograph OC-1 Devkit is an a Arduino-compatible hybrid smartwatch platform built around Soprod micromotors. The majority of hybrid smartwatches available today (Skagen, Fossil) use these micromotors, and many are based on the same Soprod reference board design. The OpenChronograph mainboards are intended to be programmable drop-in replacements for a large number of commercial hybrid smartwatches, with a suite of handy sensors.

The kit includes both a mainboard and a USB pogo serial programmer, both of which are compatible with the standard Arduino IDE.

MainBoard Features:

• Arduino-compatible Atmega328p microcontroller
• Ultra-low-power RV-1805-C3 real-time clock
• Precision MPU-9250 6DOF IMU + 3-axis magnetometer
• High-precision MPL3115A2 pressure/altitude/temperature sensor
• Support for both dual- and single-rotor micromoters (for a total of three hands)
• Forward and retrograde hand motion
• Compatible with the MicroPogo Serial Programmer (sold separately)

Why did you make it?

Hybrid smartwatches are neat, and they can offer fantastic battery life compared to modern smartwatches. Unfortunately, experimenting with them is difficult due to the closed nature of available designs. This project is intended to open up hybrid smartwatch design to the maker community.

WARNING--PLEASE READ

• These kits DO NOT come with the smartwatch donor. You will have to purchase a compatible smartwatch separately.
• Installing the OC-1 MainBoard will require you to disassemble and reassemble your donor smartwatch--a delicate process which may result in cosmetic or functional damage. You should also expect to have to do some amount of debugging after reassembly to ensure that the micromoters are making good electrical contact and that there are no mechanical interferences preventing the output shafts from turning. Please only order this item if you understand and accept these risks.
