What is it?

This programmer is exactly the same as my other listing here: ATTiny Fuse Repair Programmer V2.0

EXCEPT that this one includes advanced mode or terminal mode in addition to standalone mode. Advanced mode requires a PC terminal connection using either a USBtoTTL interface or an RS232 interface (not included). You can use standalone mode (without the interface) or advanced (terminal) mode (with the interface).

Advanced Mode Bonus Features:

1. Have you ever been curious to know what the fuse values are when your ATtiny device has been bricked/corrupted? Advanced Mode allows you to read the fuses. The results will be displayed in a terminal program.

2. The ability to program custom fuse values. In Advanced Mode you can enter the 8 bit fuse values from the terminal. These values will be programmed in the target device as long as it is in the supported device list (see below).

3. If your device supports HIGH VOLTAGE SERIAL PROGRAMMING and it is not in the supported device list, Advanced Mode provides another option to "Disable Signature Verification". With this option, whatever the fuse values entered will be programmed even if the device has corrupt signature bytes.

This programmer is an AVR HIGH VOLTAGE SERIAL programmer that is designed to program all fuses, regardless of the current state of the fuses. If you mistakenly programmed the RSTDISBL fuse, OR disabled the SPIEN fuse, or programmed the wrong values in the CKSEL fuses, NO PROBLEM! Simply insert any ATtiny from device list below and connect power. Within one second, fuses will be restored to factory settings. The LED'S will reveal the results.

The Green LED indicates programming success, the Yellow LED indicates programming error. It's that easy. No computer required! For a quick demonstration, please watch the video.

Why did you make it?

It's easy to do something wrong when you are programming your ATtiny fuses. Sometimes the fuses just don't get programmed correctly no matter how careful you are.

In 2008 I was writing code and really making progress. I was on a roll and very excited to try my new code when programming the device something went wrong. I just bricked my last device!!

I was sick and tired of throwing these devices in the garbage and frustrated of having to wait sometimes weeks for a new order. I decided to design a standalone programmer to quickly fix the device without having to fidget with USB drivers, cables and slow bloated computer programs.

This programmer will fix your ATTiny within a few seconds.

I designed the board and wrote the code for the very first version. It wasn't very long until other sellers had copied the programmer. Even when I released an update, soon afterwards the copies were updated with the same feature.

Once the ATtiny device is restored, you can reprogram it using your favorite ISP programmer and software. NEVER WORRY ABOUT PROGRAMMING YOUR AVR AGAIN!

Another time saving feature of this programmer is the ability to preserve the flash and eeprom contents while restoring the fuses so you do not have to reprogram the code in your device. To do this, simply install jumper J1. This will skip the erase command and preserve the device memory while restoring the fuses to the factory state.

(In this mode, the programmer will not restore the fuses if the LOCK bits were programmed, the erase function MUST be enabled.)

Some Important Notes regarding the use of this Programmer:

YOU MUST USE A POWER SUPPLY THAT EXCEEDS 14.5 VDC with positive center (not included) to ensure reliability in programming. It is a good idea to measure the output your DC power supply with a voltmeter to ensure correct voltage and polarity. I am trying to keep the cost and shipping weight down, therefore the power supply cannot be included with this item.

If the lock bits have been programmed, the device must be erased before the fuse restore operation will be successful. In order to accomplish this, J1 jumper must not be installed, therefore the flash and eeprom contents will be erased when the fuse restore operation is being performed.
