These are replica Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) derived from the Commodore 64 8-bit computer. The boards were created to allow Commodore 64 computers that had damaged or faulty PCBs to be successfull…

Assembly #250407

This board design was one of the earliest used by Commodore. It requires 8 x 8KB RAM ICs and many logic ICs as well as the commodore custom ICs:

Assembly #250466

This board was the last to be produced by Commodore that used the original set of custom ICs:

6526 CIAs (2)
Basic, Kernal and Char ROMs
6510 Processor
PLA
6581 SID
VIC II Video Controller

This board tends to be more reliable due to requiring fewer logic ICs, but some parts can be harder or more expensive to obtain (e.g MOS 8701 IC). The board also uses 2 x 32KB RAM ICs as opposed to more common 8 x 8KB ICs.

Assembly #250469 "Short Board"

This board was one the last to be produced by Commodore and was quite a change from the 2 earlier boards above. The entire board is a lot more narrow, giving it the "Short Board" nickname.

There are 2 revisions of the #250469 board:

The 250469 REV. A uses the 251715-01 version of the "Super-PLA". This PLA does not have the colour SRAM integrated, and the board has a separate IC for this purpose (U19).

The 250469 REV. B uses the 252535-01 version of the "Super-PLA". This PLA has the colour SRAM integrated, and therefore the board does not have a space for the U19 IC.

The custom ICs used in the #250469 boards are:

6526 CIAs (2)
Basic ROM
Combined Kernal & Character ROM
8500 (6510 compatible) Processor
Custom 64-Pin "Super-PLA" (2 versions for A and B revision boards)
SID (Later 8580 version!)
VIC II Video Controller (Later 8565 version!)

Some parts can be harder or more expensive to obtain (e.g MOS 8701, Super-PLA etc.). The board also uses 2 x 32KB RAM ICs.

Other Information

Over the past 30+ years, there have been many boards that have become damaged for various reasons such as poor storage conditions etc.

The replica boards are of the same dimensions of the originals and can therefore be used as a direct replacement to the original PCBs.

Some improvements/modifications were made:

Improved silkscreen, adding more descriptive connector labels, IC names and better placed component labels
Manufactured using modern PCB manufacturing techniques and materials.
Separate holes for R38 and it's accompanying capacitor so they no longer need to be stacked on the 250407 board.

Prototype boards were tested with diagnostic software and harnesses to ensure no issues were encountered.

transport costs

Got another C64 board today - as always in perfect quality. But I'm very disappointed of the shipping costs. $17 to Germany is a lot and I had to pay additional 12,41€ customs/import duty fee to DHL. Never had to pay that before... even after Brexit.

Great looking board, fair price.

I am very happy with the board. I plan to build a new C64 with available new replacement chips. My original C64, purchased in 1983, is still working, and I was going to transfer the MOS chips to the new board, but decided to build a complete new C64 instead. The SixtyClone board quality is fantastic and the labeling makes it easy to populate.

What a wonderful avocation

I received my sixty clone (with resistors & electrolytics) a month or two ago and using the BOM sent away for many of the parts from various sources. I've started more recently to assemble this, a "winter project" and it has been very enjoyable. taking my time, being very slow and deliberate. Having few non functional C64 motherboards (various types) to draw from for more difficult to obtain parts will be most helpful. As I go along, I look at improvements like Jiffy Dos and the upcoming VICII FPGA (https://accentual.com/vicii-kawari/) which I'm very hopeful of. PAL or NTSC? How about both and more? Build your own computer from scratch and make it very cool...

aphexteknol’s sixtyclone review

I bought one of Rob’s excellent SixtyClone boards, the 250466 specifically. Just finished constructing it last weekend, and fired up on the first try. Quality of these boards FAR surpasses that of the originals as one would expect, and I’m quite happy with it. Documentation is perhaps a little lacking, but with as much information out there on the web it shouldn’t be too difficult for most moderate to advanced hobbyists to knock one of these together. Just pay attention and use your best judgment sourcing components, and you should be golden. Quality of the included components in the resistor/capacitor kits is also quite good too I would add; I saw no reason to substitute anything for my build. Now I want to build the other revisions. :) -aphexteknol

I just finished populating SixtyClone 250407 and loving it!

SixtyClone PCB is easy to work with, has superb quality and looks simply amazing with the gold finish. Matching the colour of the SwinSID replacement to the PCB is a very nice touch too.

Beautiful recreation

Ordered a purple 250466 pcb, absolutely beautiful recreation.
Arrived in a reasonable timeframe, think it was about 2 weeks or so to Australia.
With other reviews mentioning the packaging I was a little worried and it did come as they described but to my surprise (and relief) it arrived in perfect condition with so signs of being bent or anything like that.
Fully built now and working just like new. :)
Bonus case badge and rear sticker are a nice touch.

Faithfull to the classic micro!

I bought this board to rebuild a C64 that I destroyed by ripping the traces from a chip, and I must say that this SixtyClone board is faithful to the original Commodore 64 motherboards. I had a awesome time rebuilding my c64 from scratch. I did have a problem with loading from floppies, but it was a chip that didn't survive the on the old board. Still I was up and running like I was using the original board.

Well made board but packaging and infor could be better.

The sixtyclone board is well made and looks gorgeous, pure art. It was a pleasure to solder on to with no issues.

The only niggles for me is packaging and documentation. It arrives it a long thin cardboard box and upon opening it contained only the board, no documentation at all, no anti static bag, no padding, not even a fragile/do not bend sticker on the outside of the box.
But as I said, there were no issues or damage.
The board works out a touch over £26, I would gladly pay £30 for a bit more protection.

My board arrived in no time and this project has been such a joy. The board is beautiful (in my case the blue/gold 250466) and thoroughly enjoyed building the computer using as many new parts as possible. I recommend the arananet part locator: https://arananet.net/c64pl/

Mine fired up first time, I'm proud to say, although I did have some intermittent issues due to (it seems) a slightly faulty processor. After switching that I've been using my sixtyclone without issue. You still have to use some original chips, although I hope in time that modern replacements for the VicII, 6510 and CIAs will become available. Then again maybe a real 6510 and VicII are what makes a C64 a real C64, I don't know.

There was a trace I needed to cut with the revision of the board that I have, which is a shame but not really a problem. I also found that the fastening holes didn't quite line up with the screw holes in my PixelWizard case, I had to elongate a couple of the holes in the pcb a little. Again, not really a problem. I also had to file down the edges of the cartridge port, as some of the cartridges I have didn't fit. That was easy and you can't tell that's been done.

My thanks and admiration for the job that bob has done. Really proud to own this and look forward to the Vic-20 one! (hint)

Perfect PCB, poorly packaged

I ordered a blue 250407 board and am very pleased with the quality of the PCB. No complaints whatsoever, it really is perfect - beautiful even. The colour is very nice but it would be great to have an "old school" green/copper (clear solder mask) variant. Offering something a bit less flashy-pimp or candy-store'ish would get a second sale from me, no hesitation. Don't get me wrong, the offered colours are great but possibly a bit " Mr. Cool" for old, conservative types. ;-)

Luckily it arrived undamaged, considering the poor packaging. The PCB was loosely sandwiched between two thin pieces of corrugated cardboard, nothing to prevent it from being bent or broken. My package was badly bent in one corner, thankfully the board had shifted to the other end so there was no damage. No markings whatsoever on the package warning the shippers not to bend, etc. Not good enough, sorry to say, although probably an improvement over the soft envelopes noted by previous reviewers. Maybe get a large sheet of that white corrugated plastic, cut it down to board sizes and sandwich the PCB. Tape around the edges, then wrap in shipping paper and write "DO NOT BEND". Still thin and light and shouldn't cost much more.

Otherwise, the documentation, limited to an online BOM, is thorough but including a paper copy would've been a nice touch. No big deal and as advertised.

This goofy review platform requires me to rate the aspects of the sale individually, so here they are;

Such a delight

The Sixtyclone ASSY 250466 was such a delight to build. When I have ordered it, I had no time schedule for the assembly, but seeing this popular C64 mainboard, that is produced with modern quality, in black with the gold plated pads, made it hard to resist to start soldering, right after I have received it. Fortunately, I had almost every IC as spares in stock, so I have reached my goal pretty soon. It only required the DIN jacks, the DSubs, the metal bracket for the expansion port, which I could salvage from a cheaply bought C64 mainboard. I then just had to borrow the VIC and SID from another working C64 and the Sixtyclone worked right after I have switched it on.

The video quality is as good as the original ASSY 250466. The jail bars, which are a pretty dominant feature of all other C64 ASSYs are almost not visible.

After acquiring all the BOM I finally assembled this board

And it doesn't work... I checked to see if maybe there was a "fix" that included cutting a trace and soldering a resistor through a via like the Rev 0 board... and no... the micro vias on this board are indicative of it being of a modern design... I was very sad to see this product not work.

Really nice pcb

This pcb is really well done. Good materials, shining colors, every piece to be soldered is indicated both with part number and electrical value.
So it is almost impossible to fail while placing the components. There is just one error but it is carefully indicated in an attached paper.
My new C64 is ready to be hardly used.

But as it's not pre-tinned at the factory, it starts to oxidize immediately. You should select this option when ordering the PCB, it's very cheap.

Perfect for a longer lasting C64 repro

I like the board quality of the Sixtyclone better than the original and the color choice is great, also the possibility of using the MOS chips we like and socketing everything is great

I also use some TTL-CMOS compatible logics for saving power on 5v line like the 54ACT373

The only downside is :
• actual V1.1a revisions of the 407 board doesn’t have the NTSC Jumper hole punched like the original which i need to find a different spot with bodged wires for my VICii2 PAL/NTSC board

Great PCB

The PCB is top notch and some of the best I've ordered anywhere online. The BOM list for components is very nice though it's geared more towards PAL and doesn't call out NTSC versions well enough. As long as you pay attention to that, it works well.

On the flip side, documentation needs improved/refined and the communication with the seller is lacking. Messages go unanswered which can be frustrating.

Superbly made board

Just wanted to say 10/10 for the quality of the SixtyClone pcb (looks great in blue) and the extremely quick postage. The only thing that could be improved is a more robust shipping envelope, though mine arrived without a scrape. Cheers :)

Well designed product, looks gorgeous, price is right!

The board was shipped promptly and I’m really impressed with the quality. Rob is friendly and helpful and has done a great job with this #250469 replica.

It’s a very high quality board, you can tell it was designed with care and attention to details. I’ve got the version with black solder mask and it looks just fabulous with the gold contacts!

There is no printed documentation, but a very detailed shared spreadsheet with the list of components needed and their positions. Mostly accurate, but my advice is to double check each item before going for the suggested part numbers. There may be other suitable alternatives and also some items are missing. At least this was true in the case of the spreadsheet for the assy #250469 - the ones for other boards seem more accurate and “tested”.

The packaging was ok, but could be improved (the board was simply sent in a padded envelope). No other complaints!

All in all, I’m very happy with my purchase. Excellent quality, looks great and the price is a bargain! Definitely recommended!

Fast delivery and High Quality board

When I ordered this board from the UK to SoCal I was warned that due to Covid-19 I should expect a delay (I believe 6 weeks was mentioned). I was ok with that and waited.
Within a couple of days the board travelled all the way to LAX. There it stayed for about a week until it made the last 50 mile trip to my home. So in total it took about 10 days. Very happy with that really, your mileage may vary.
Now as for the board, I ordered the black and let me tell you it is a thing of beauty. Quality is superb and I highly recommend it.

just the resistors confused a little bit, a mix of pal&ntsc, but had 330 & 100 Ohm here, so it's no problem.

Board quality is just amazing, in fact 1:1 with original. Soldering on this board is 20 times easier than on an original due to the better quality and size of the holes. There is a very useful BOM list associated with the board (google spreadsheets, you will receive it in thee email or check the product page) that list different options to obtain the components (new and when possible old ones too).

This is an amazing way of resurrecting your degraded c64 or create a durable and visually amazing custom one - you can technically reuse all the original components from an original board or mix between old and new.

Very good quality and nice board.

I ordered a 250466 SixtyClone, I really like the quality of the PCB, the red color is nice and vibrant. Soldering the board was a breeze, I added new capacitors, resistors, etc. It booted in one go and it works perfectly! I am very happy with it and due to Corona I’m also going to do the 250407.

Best C64 Board Replacement
