Good news! The USB connectors and transceivers are now pre-installed!! The kit no longer requires surface-mount soldering!!
These boards still have the old silkscreen. They say "RaSCSI" instead of "PiSCSI", but otherwise they are identical.
The workaround for issue 672 is still required with these boards if you're installing the DB-25 connector. It only requires a razor blade to cut single trace on the PCB.

What is it?

PiSCSI is a virtual SCSI device emulator that runs on a Raspberry Pi. It can emulate multiple SCSI devices concurrently, provides a control interface to attach / detach drives, as well as insert and eject removable media. Simply launch the software, connect the PiSCSI interface board to your computer and the devices will be recognized as physical SCSI devices!

This listing is for a KIT with the parts to assemble a PiSCSI. You will need to solder the through-hole parts. You have flexibility for how you assemble your PiSCSI. Some options are:

“Standard Configuration” will fit on all Raspberry Pi’s, except for version 1
“Compact Configuration” allows a Raspberry Pi Zero to be mounted on top of the PiSCSI board
“PowerBook configuration” includes the connector for a SCSI Powerbook. Check your Powerbook to make sure there is enough vertical clearance. Mounting bracket is available to 3D print here: https://github.com/piscsi/piscsi-hw/tree/master/hw/pb_bracket

Why did you make it?

PiSCSI builds upon the legacy of the RaSCSI project, which was originally developed for the Sharp X68000 in Japan. PiSCSI includes a slew of new features and capabilities.

Important notes:

This hardware is targeted towards tinkerers and advanced users. If you want a simple, stable SCSI storage device, I'd recommend taking a look at BlueSCSI
This hardware is being listed here as a service because of my interest in Retro computing. I'm not trying to make any money off this project. I've ordered all of the parts for this in bulk so that I can pass the savings on to you.

ready to supercharge your old Mac?

Have an old SCSI Mac, an RPi, a soldering gun, and like to tinker? This kit is awesome! As exciting as it is, take the time to slow down and solder everything correctly. After assembly, a little RPi0w or RPi02 and a flashed uSD card with the basics will get you going. The dev community around the PiSCSI on discord is so amazing and helpful, with new tinkerers adding features over the years. Originally just to make all that cheap expansive uSD storage accessible, devs have added optical drive emulation, networking, and even video out! It's just amazing what this little kit can learn to do!

Nice device

It s nice device but different outcomes even after stepping through with Youtube videos and WiKi instructions...maybe my pi zero isn't stock; not casting blame as I still haven't gone on discord and clearly others haven't had the same issues

RaSCSI

I've bought 3 of the RASCSI kits so far. The HD emulation is great, but throw in the CD-ROM emulation, Daynaport ethernet emulation, the web interface, and with it being open source with an active community, more and more features and improvements are being developed, and it should be part of any vintage Mac enthusiast's toolkit!

Amazing device

My first thought when hearing about RaSCSI was "do we really need another SCSI emulator product?" But after learning more about the featureset and versatility of RaSCSI, I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed, and this didn't turn out to be my last RaSCSI purchase either. While other SCSI solutions locks you into certain configurations without an easy means to play around with device types and volume sizes, all configuration in RaSCSI is done on the fly in the software, which opens up a world of possibilities. The killer feature for many vintage Mac setups in particular, is the DaynaPORT ethernet adapter emulation, which gets really old machines such as Mac SEs online without tracking down hard-to-find and expensive hardware adapters.

Great emulator and beautiful hardware.

For the price, can't go wrong. RaSCSI is versatile. Mine works with a Pi Zero (headless for a better performance). My use is with a hardware sampler EMU E4 , and it's fantastic to have all the possibilities with the web interface. The Discord server for support is helpful. Shipping with USPS First-Class International service was OK for me.

Fun and really awesome project

I brought three of these after desperately looking for a cheaper SCSI-to-SD solution, and with the combined cost of $30 for the kit and $10 for a Pi Zero this is probably the cheapest solution for your Macintosh SCSI needs. What do you get for this?
-Ability to present up to 6 SCSI devices to your Mac by mounting disk images on your SD card.
-A Web Management portal so you can remotely manage your disk images, attach them according to your needs and even upload files and have it automatically convert them into a SCSI HFS CD to be presented to your Mac.
-Apparently also the ability to connect your Ethernet-less Mac to the network. Very handy if you don't fancy spending hundreds of dollars on a PDS network card for your SE/30.

Needless to say, I'm really stoked about this and looking forward to buying plenty more of these in the future for my vintage Mac collection! Thank you again for a fantastic product, excellent documentation and providing this in kit form to save on assembly costs. You rock!

The downside? I wish there was a Canadian distributor as international shipping is a pain!

Beautiful hardware

Easily solderable; well-documented. Minus one star for design - it’s designed for the Raspi, but interferes with the USB headers by ~1mm and stresses the board. Other than that it’s an innovative solution to a common problem — well, relatively speaking as a retro-computing person. Also, the kit made me think: I’m spoiled by modern ICs and their fancy serial connections. Soldering 3x 50-pin connectors is no joke! Definitely got my lead quota for 2021.

Was a fun device to play with!

Used this device with an Apple IIe and a Ramfast SCSI and it “just” worked. Was able to daisy chain old SCSI devices as well. Thanks for a cool device.

Faster than expected. Booted great on Mac Classic II

Easy enough to solder, watch for solder bridges. Works great. Added the Oled display and working on an enclosure.

The best SCSI emulator for the price!

So I don't really have anything to say about the RaSCSI. You plug it in, install the software and GO!!!!!!! It's fast and recently SCSI ethernet was added (for testing ;))! Shipping was, eh at best. It wasn't the seller's fault (Tony) but the USPS First-Class International service. Just wanted to note that. Documentation was good, but it could be improved by adding more wiki pages. The Discord server for communication is friendly and helpful. If you are thinking about buying it, GO FOR IT!!!!!

Thank you for the feedback! USPS seems to be having a lot of issues with first class international service. They (temporarily?) even removed it from their online tool. Last night I removed it as a shipping option, since it seems to cause nothing but trouble.

Excellent kit

I bought the kit version of this. Having never done any surface mount soldering before, I was a bit worried this would be difficult. It was easy! This board worked on the first try and I was able to boot my Macintosh SE/30 right off of disk image files on my Raspberry Pi! I only wished it had a header to connect the computer's drive LED to.

Thank you for the kind review, John! It actually does have a header to connect the computer's drive LED to. If you look at the bottom of the board, near the Raspberry Pi connector above the micro USB connector, there are two holes labeled "GND" and "ACT". You should be able to connect an LED to those pins.

Going forward, I'll include the pins with the kits. Please PM me if you'd like me to send you some pins for that connector.

Great build, Great support

The product itself is great, very nicely packaged with bubble wrap and some stickers. The vendor went above and beyond to reduce the shipping price to my country. I order the soldered (pre-built) version and the work is very professional.
RaSCSI itself is versatile, easy to setup and connect. The community is very helpful and the documentation very detailed.
RaSCSI will let you connect virtual HardDrive to your old Macintosh or Apple II, but the community is also working on Networking. so there is good chance the product gain functionalities over time.
The price is very reasonable for the quality and the support you get. a must have if you are in. Mac retro-computing

Very fun to build!

Great soldering project! Really enjoyed assembling this. All of the connectors are through-hole, but there are four IC's that are surface-mount. I found it very easy to tack down one corner, and then solder the rest of the legs. I really enjoyed all of the Mac icons silkscreened to the board. Very cool.

Most versitle SCSI device out there

Having a software defined SCSI device is amazing - you can use a web interface to download images, mount CD's, and do just about anything else to the SCSI chain you need. SCSI Ethernet is also coming to this device as well. That is one of the best features - software can be easily updated to add new features and capabilities long after you buy - and it's all opensource - get hacking!

Assembly has surface mount transistors so if you're not comfortable doing that kind of soldering, get the prebuilt version.

Performance is great on a Pi4 - compact macs boot in just seconds.

RaSCSI is the ultimate price/feature/performance option out there for Vintage Macintosh users.

Works great! Very useful!

Highly recommended!

It's a straight-forward build and worked on the first try. I'm used it with a Mac IIsi with no other way to boot (dead floppy and HDD) and had no problems.

I'm using it with a Raspberry Pi 2 and performance is reasonable - Installing NetBSD took a while, but it's hard to tell if that's simply the 20MHz CPU limitation of my IIsi. Because I didn't want to wear out the SD card in my RPi, I am keeping my images on a USB-connected 2.5" HDD (PiDrive). That might also be causing some performance degradation, but who is looking to have a greased-lightning performance experience on a 30 year old machine?
