Persistence of Vision (POV) kit

This kit contains components for building a Persistence of Vision staff. Full documentation of this project can be found at povstaff.readthedocs.io. The current version of this project and kit is version 4.1.

An earlier version of the project has been published on Instructables.

Please note that this is a kit and not a ready to use staff. This kit contains most (but not all) components for building your own staff. It is intended for people with some soldering and programming experience. Please read the Build guide before buying to make sure you are comfortable completing the build.

Required parts and materials

The kit contains all the electronics, LED strips, wiring, switches and spacers needed for the staff. Detailed listing is available in the Build guide.

In addition to this kit, you will also need the following parts, which need to be purchased separately:

Two 18650 Li-Ion batteries
Polycarbonate tube from flowtoys.com
Wood dowels

Great way to learn to solder and build your own POV staff

This is a fun project for beginners and experts alike - the staff is beautiful and documentation is very detailed. Island Robotics is also very helpful if you have any questions, I couldn't recommend this project enough.

Beyond Satisfaction

After not wanting to pay for an expensive LED Staff I had to thought to build my own and after a casual google search was able to find this project. Soon I knew I had to have it. I hadn't soldered since high school. Never worked with microprocessors or LEDS. About as green as it gets. So I borrowed a soldering iron from a friend and collected all the materials. The documentation was so clear and concise there was no trepidation and I had a blast building it in a single afternoon. But alas in the testing stage it wouldn't switch on. After looking at some of the other reviews I had gotten the jist that Alexander must be a pretty cool dude. What. An. Understatement. This guy is the BEST. I reached out via email and he was able to get back to me quickly and we spent the next few days emailing back and forth troubleshooting the issue. A lapse in my attention to detail had led to me aligning the LED's incorrectly. Alexander got me sorted out and 48 hours later I was up and running! Whenever I've talked to someone about the project I cant stop myself from telling them how awesome my experience has been. And of course the final product is just incredible. Looks sleek and functions magnificently. Now my wife wants her own and I'm considering buying one to build with my 14 y/o niece. I just couldn't recommend this kit more.

Great project, with clear instructions with fun results!

I found this project after weeks of searching for the right POV setup and Alexander's project delivers. It's fun and easy to make, there are clear instructions and it provides a solid foundation if you're looking to tinker with the software or hardware. The result is a working POV staff that is fun to play with. I've ordered two times from Island Robotics and shipping was fast from the east coast to San Diego both times. The kit of hardware he sells with the board is great and worth the cost.

Well thought out and seller is very knowledgeable.

I ordered the POV staff kit and it literally comes with everything you need except the wood dowel, the LED's, and the outer tube. I did make a couple mistakes during construction but the seller was very helpful and shortly had me enjoying the coolest POV staff ever. Thank you

Totally awesome kit! Great instructions! Works well!

Really well thought out kit (I ordered the whole kit in addition to the main board). Got it together with no trouble, worked first time (well, I did have to swap the comm wires, but that was my fault). Looking forward to making all sorts of cool spinny pictures. Planning to order at least two more kits for an upcoming performance.
