The backplane section has the following features:
Unlike most backplanes, this one does not have power input connectors, such as a barrel socket or screw terminal. However, there are several other ways to power it. As with most RCBus/RC2014 compatible systems, it can be powered from a serial module. Alternatively, it can be powered from the dedicated power supply module, such as SC142. When used as a backplane extension it can be powered from the backplane or motherboard it is extending.
I designed this backplane as the RC2014 backplane 8 that comes with the Classic II kit only has a few spare sockets. Anyone wishing to significantly expand their Classic II will need a larger backplane. This backplane provides more slots and is also expandable with additional backplane sections, whilst retaining the simplicity of the 40-pin bus sockets.
Enhanced RC2014 bus modules (those with some pins in the second row) may not work or may be functionally limited when used with 40-pin backplanes, such as the RC2014 backplane 8 and this backplane (SC141). Although there are many enhanced bus modules, there are relatively few that really need the extra pins. Similarly, many extended 80-pin RCBus modules can be used with 50-pin backplanes. Sticking with 40-pins means simpler designs with less soldering.
The documentation can be found at www.scc.me.uk or by following the link below.
This backplane conforms to the RCBus specification v1.0 for RCBus-2014 40-pin.
The RCBus specification includes RCBus-2014 (both RC2014 standard 40-pin bus and RC2014 enhanced 60-pin bus) and also the full 80-pin RCBus. The 80-pin RCBus provides support for advanced Z80 features, such as the interrupt daisy-chain, as well as support for other processor families.
This kit includes all the components needed to make the module, as shown in the first picture. Other modules and backplanes shown in the pictures are not included. You will require tools, solder, and cleaning materials to assemble this kit.
The printed circuit board is available on its own here.
