This is the classic game of Tic Tac Toe, but played on three levels. You can win by connecting three of your positions in a row on any single level. But you can also score by having three connected across levels. The game is more fun because it is easier to win, so there is often a winner and every game played doesn't end in a draw. Also, the game is open source. The onboard computer has the Arduino UNO bootloader and there is an FTDI port to allow easy uploading of sketches. You can make the game your own or re-purpose the hardware for another project.

Having to spend more time at home lately, I was on the search for good soldering kits to pass the time and the fact that I really enjoy putting kits together. Tindie has some great ones!! However, looking at online sources, the kits are either too easy and don't take a lot of time or when you are done, don't do much. So I set out to design a fun kit that would actually do something when you were done. I also wanted to make it open source so when you are bored with it, you could experiment or repurpose it. And I thought a 2 player game would be nice to give you opportunity to do something with someone else.

This is the first kit I am offering on Tindie and I am a little apprehensive. Sending out prebuilt and tested devices is my bread and butter. I can reasonably assure that they will get in your hands working well. Because this is a kit, I won't accept returns unless it is a clear manufacturing issue. This kit is also not for beginners. Even though it is all through-hole soldering, the large ground plane makes the ground connections a little challenging as does the tight pitch of the LED leads that are easily shorted. The parts were also expensive so I only produced 5 kits and the prototype.

I want to gage the interest in a kit like this, so if it sells out and you would be interested in getting one, please get on the waiting list. If I do a bigger run I may be able to get a better price break (particularly on the LEDs). I was going to go to surface mount on the LEDs but I love the way they softly glow when lit. If you buy a kit and assemble it, I would love your feedback.

The kit includes the 3 PCBs, all parts for the computer section and all LEDs and capacitors for each section. It also includes a USB cable to power the game (takes about 150mA max when playing), the brass rods that connect the levels, and some rubber feet to help protect the surface you play this on (be careful on nice surfaces, the lead clippings can scratch bad). Everything to make the completed game is included. You need to supply a 5V source to the USB plug. I recommend a phone charger (Do not use your computer USB port unless you are sure the game is working properly). If you want to reprogram the game, you will need to supply an FTDI cable.
