What is it?

The C2C caberQU board applies a voltage to all pins of a cable and measures which ones are connected to the other end. It features LEDs for each of the 24 pins and even shield. So in total 25 LEDs offer all possible combinations for USB-C receptacle pin usage in different modes:

USB 2.0/1.1
USB Power Delivery
USB 3.0/3.1/3.2
Alternate Mode
Debug Accessory Mode
Audio Adapter Accessory Mode

There is an extensive manual included which explains the connectors, modes and necessary pins.

V1 vs V3 Which one should I buy?

There are two versions available which are mostly identical, but there are a few differences:

V1 has a standard battery, V3 has a German name brand
V3 can be used with the case
V1 has no holes for hanging it somewhere
V1 has a slightly different silkscreen print

Both V1 and V3 can be used for testing USB C to USB C cables identically. They come with the same manual and have the same LED combinations available.

Why did you make it?

The amount of possible USB C cable combinations is endless. If you use the wrong cable, data transmission may be slower than possible or certain devices may not work at all. In the USB C standard, the cable plays an important role and has to advertise itself as such. All of them need to have certain pins connected, some need to be grounded, some need to have resistors attached.

What makes it special?

Unfortunately there is no easy way to extract whether a certain cable can support a certain use case. If a cable has a broken pin, that makes it even worse, due to their unpredictable behavior. The C2C caberQU cable tester solves this once and for all. By flipping the USB connectors, the opposing LEDs for some pins light up due to them not being mirrored. That's on purpose and defined in the USB C standard. The product is sold with one CR2032, the PCB and an extensive manual. The USB C cable is not included. You have to extract the needed pins for your desired usage on your own, unfortunately that can not be done universally for all possible combinations.

No dedicated power supply is needed, all necessary power is supplied via the CR2032 battery. The battery is only discharged when a cable is connected and should last for a while.

Please note that if you have a cheaper shipping option I'm gladly using it and refunding you the difference. The item still is a prototype. It is working as intended, but funny quirks and other things are possible. It is not certified and only suited for prototyping.

Excellent product!

Great product that allows testing of USB-C cables. Excellent pamphlet included which describes most common cable types. Very nice packaging and fast delivery. Highly recommended.

Useful & nicely designed

This is a nice little cable tester. Once familiarized with the pins, which is easily done by going through the well-written documentation shipped with the device, testing USB-C cables becomes a breeze.

Useful tester in a compact package

Nice compact continuity tester for USB-C cables. Need to read the manual to understand the output of the tester, but once you're familiar with that this works great.

The instruction manual is very well written and illustrated, a rarity it seems these days. Kudos on this!

Would recommend to anybody looking to test their cables for basic functionality.

An excellent product from an excellent seller

The C2C caberQU is an impressive tool that fulfills a simple goal. The board and the case are both high quality parts and I am very pleased I have this device in my kit.

More importantly, when I believed the shipment had been lost or held by customs, the seller went out of their way to make things right. It ended up being unnecessary as the shipment arrived before any action was taken, but they went above and beyond in ensuring I received what I ordered.

For anyone considering buying, the product is top-tier and from a reputable seller. I would just recommend purchasing the tracking for your shipment if it will be traveling internationally.

Fantastic little cable tester

I got this to help me work out why some of my cables behaved differently to others. Now I know which of my cables are purely for PD, which support nothing more than USB 2.0 (curiously many also support audio accessory mode), and which (all two of them) support USB 3.0.

The good:
* Arrived very quickly
* Very well packaged
* Case fits well
* The manual is awesome

The not so good:
* The battery screw uses a different, smaller, hex size than the case screws
* I now know how many of my cables are expensive junk

C2C caberQU

Device is larger than I realized, but this isn't an issue. Includes a CR2032 battery and a little screw (I think M1) to keep the battery in place. Comes with a booklet that details USB C connections, the schematics, and a useful listing of the different connections that various cables will have. These listed will help you determine the type of cable, as the LED indications alone aren't trivially obvious. Remember to test both sides of each end of the cable! There is a link to download a 3D printed case, but I designed my own. Board dimensions are 45x87mm with two (2) M3 screw holes. The test points on the board have little pinpricks showing evidence of testing before shipment which is good practice. Great product all around; 5/5.

C2C caberQU delivers solid diagnostics quickly.

My company uses usb-c cables in a very rugged way and needed a way to quickly diagnose data transmission issues. The C2C caberQU has helped eliminate the guesswork often involved in wondering whether or not a cable is any good. Great whilst it lasted

This is a fantastic idea and it can really help you to work out what is the appropriate cable to use. However it is not a very robust design, which is shame given the cost of the device. . The main issue, with mine is that the battery "holder" failed when it pinged off, rending the device unusable. Maybe a redesign to make this more robust ought to be considered.

Most impressive

- Purchased V2 unit (no case).

Filled Need to Test USB-C Cables for the Chicago Fire Dept

In the Chicago Fire Dept. Electronic Communications Repair Shop, we use USB-C cables to connect a smart phone to an LCD & keyboard in vehicle work station. We were suspicious of problems with the cables. This tester helps troubleshooting when time is critical and we must make a repair to get the ambulance back out on the street. Easy to use and made very well. We highly recommend this Traunmuller product.

Nifty!
