What is it?

This is a key holder that lets you backup your important files while you sleep! Powered by an Omega2+, you simply plug in your USB drive when you hang up your keys, and overnight all your family pictures, word docs, git repos, etc... get backed up onto it in a secure, encrypted container! Why did you make it?

I've wanted to setup an offsite backup for awhile now, but a few things deterred me. I didn't want to pay a monthly fee for access to my files. I want to be in control of them, not have to depend on some third party. I want to know who has access to my important data and not have to worry about data breaches or hackers. This system achieves those goals. I know my files are on a flash drive with my keys, I control who has access to it. And if there's an emergency, like say a wildfire or evacutation, all I have to do is grab my keys on the way out the door and I have my backups with me, not on a random network on the other side of the country.

Easy to setup

• Follow the simple hardware setup steps to get the kit assembled and insert the USB flash drive you want to use.

• Complete the software setup to get the omega2+ on your wireless network and use our helpful setup app to get the encrypted container setup on the flash drive with a password. Our app works on windows, linux and mac!

• Configure your backup software to backup to keychain backup every night. This is an example of setting up Duplicati, but any backup software will work that supports backing up to an SSH host or uses the SFTP protocol.

How it works

When you plug in a USB flash drive that has been setup for keychain backup, the device opens the encrypted container using the stored password you picked during setup. It then opens a new ssh server on port 2222 to show the device is ready to be backed up to. By setting up your backup system to connect to keychain backup on port 2222, you can make sure that backups only happen when the USB flash drive is inserted and ready to be backed up to.

In order to protect against filesystem corruption, the setup app sets up filesystem on the flash drive using EXT4, a journaling filesystem. This filesystem is highly resilient to interrupted writes. Individual files may get corrupted, but the filesystem will be fine. And the next time the backup runs, the backup software can re copy those files that were interrupted by the removal. Also, by scheduling backups to run in the middle of the night and be done by early morning, most problems with interrupting the backup can be avoided.

And since losing your keys or having them stolen is a would be a huge problem, the data on the flash drive is encrypted. It won't be able to be accessed without the password you picked when setting up the system.

An important part of this system is restoring files. Simply insert the USB flash drive into the keychain backup system, then use your backup program to restore the files off the usb drive. An example of restoring files using Duplicati can be found here.
