The LumosRing comes fully assembled. The controller is the ESP32-S2 running CircuitPython. The LEDs are WS2812C-2020 NeoPixels. There are a pair of tactile switches at the top edge and there is even a mini tone speaker.
Well ... umm ... LEDs light up and a bunch of them are in the shape of a ring.
The original prototype was created on a dare and it was the DotClock. When the 35cm prototype became the 10cm product PCB, the first demo was a round clock. Then more samples were written and more ideas came along and it became much more than a clock!
The first CircuitPython example is a facsimile of an analog clock, which uses the outer rings to render the hands of a clock (hours, minutes, and seconds). For fun, the dual 5x7 block in the middle renders a pair of animated eyes which look around and blink.
There are also examples for a chess game timer and a metronome. There is a demo to display a simple 5x7 font in the middle. There is also an example showing some of Adafruit's matrix LED animations.
In addition to the 240 LEDs making up the outer ring and the 70 LEDs making up the dual 5x7 block in the middle, there is a tone buzzer and a pair of push button switches along the top edge.
If you plan to make a case for the LumosRing, there is an optional black LED acrylic faceplate kit cut from Secret Sign, a special acrylic which looks black but allows the LEDs light to shine through. There is also an optional arcade button kit which plugs onto the 0.1" headers and duplicates the function of the on-board edge switches.
But it can do so much more!
You can ...
Thanks to the LumosRing's CircuitPython library, customization is easy. The library makes creating clock, timer, and timed reaction games easy. The LumosRing may also be customized without the library. It's easy to program the LEDs directly with any NeoPixel modules for CircuitPython.
The latest CircuitPython, libraries, and sample program are pre-installed. There are extra examples included on the GitLab project page.
The library code and all samples are open source under the MIT license so you can even change the library if you want. (You are also encouraged to post your changes for inclusion into the open source for others to enjoy.)
The LumosRing comes fully assembled and the software pre-installed. It includes the ESP32-S2.
There are options to add to the LumosRing, depending on your needs ...
