Read More…This small Framework Mainboard shim lets you attach your own power button, connect a USB 2.0 device (or multiple!) without sacrificing a Type-C port, and wire up some software-controllable LEDs easily.
With this tiny board, you no longer need to mechanically plan your case around pressing the tiny onboard power button, or add Type-C hubs just to connect a USB boot drive - and the LEDs can help you add some bling or diagnostic output to your case!
The board plugs right onto the input connector, where the input cover would normally plug into. The silkscreen shows you the correct orientation to plug the board in, as well as pinouts of all of the pin header holes.
For the fingerprint LED connections, the footprint is chosen so that you can solder the ever-present 4-pin RGB LEDs into it. Keyboard backlight connection is high-power and you can drive quite a few higher-power LEDs from it (or some other PWMable non-inductive thing), but you need a resistor if you only intend to drive a single LED. Caps Lock LED output is low-power, with an inline resistor on the motherboard, so it can directly drive a single LED but not much more.
This shim fits within the outline of the motherboard, and is therefore unlikely to interfere with your 3D printed case. That said, it does stick out vertically a bit, about 1mm higher than the plastic parts of the RAM slot. I can assemble you a shim with a 0.6mm PCB instead of 1.6mm, pick the corresponding option if you'd like your shim to be unobtrusive! The 0.6mm shim also has nicer and more readable silkscreen, and the PCB is black so it fits with the tone of the Mainboard better.
Currently, you can toggle the CapsLock, fingerprint LED and keyboard backlight outputs from Linux or Windows applications. Some of the LED inputs/outputs (fingerprint/caps) might be repurpose-able as GPIOs with a modded EC firmware, too!
