Description:

The ESP32 Control Board (ECB) is a ESP32 based board for temperature monitoring/PWM fan control/addressable LED control in 3D printer enclosures, audio-visual racks, and computer/networking racks. This ESP32 board features, the powerful ESP-WROOM-32E module, with integrated WiFi and Bluetooth functionality (BR/EDR/BLE). The ESP32 is a chip designed with TSMC ultra-low power management technology. The proven ESP32-D0WD-V3 chip is located in the core of the developed module.

THE ECB IS THE FIRST WIFI BASED FAN CONTROL BOARD.

The ECB has a USB-C interface for download of firmware and power during development or communication to a host computer.

The board is flashed with an ESPHome image to allow immediate inclusion onto your WiFi network and OTA programming. It also has headers that allow use with conventional D1 Mini style daughter boards and is therefore pin compatible with most accessories.

The board has a JST SH connector with I2C or PDM Microphone interface and selectable (3.3/5V) power and ground compatible with Adafruit's STEMMA QT/ Sparkfun Qwiic sensors. With optional JST SH to JST PH cable, it also supports STEMMA and Grove interfaces with the proper cable.

The ECB comes in two versions: (1) the STANDARD (STD) version with power up to 10 amps supplied via 5.5mm x 2.5/2.1mm barrel connector, and (2) the HIGH POWER (HP) version with power supplied up to 16 amps via 6-pin PCI-e connector. Other than the power rating and connector, all specs and functionality of both boards are the same.

The ECB also has four Molex KK (PC fan style) that has one 5v driven output, one 5v tolerant input, in addition to fan (typ. 12v) power and ground for 4+ amps per connector and up to 10 amps (High Power version: 16 amps) for all four connectors.

The ESP32 processor is protective by buffers and ESD protection that exceeds JESD 22 for years of reliable operation, and conforms tightly to the Intel 4-Wire Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Controlled Fan Specification for compatibility with all 4-Wire PWM fans on the market.

It also has two, 3-pin screw connector for One-Wire devices, each with 3.3v power and ground.

Compatible with most PWM PC style fans with speed return. Of course other use cases for these interfaces such as driving LED strings are available.
I/O: One-Wire interface on two screw down three position headers with common One-Wire signal and 3.3v power and ground. DS18B20 temperature sensors available here.
I/O: Buffered Open-collector 2-pin 2.54mm header.
I/O: USB 2.0 via USB-C connector using the CP2102N.
I/O: Standard WEMOS daughter interface on two 1x8 pin headers.
I/O: JST SH conn w/ I2C/PDM interface 3.3v/5.0v selectable power (compatible with Adafruit's STEMMA QT/ Sparkfun Qwiic sensors).

Please note that some fans especially older ones do not conform with the "Intel 4-Wire PWM Controller Fans" specification. These fans do not stop spinning with a PWM duty cycle of 0% but spin at their minimum RPM. Below is a list of some of these fans currently known to us:

Solid product, easy to configure

I have been looking for exactly this to control the fans in the rack for my home lab. Solid easy to configure product that even does a bit more than I need. Support when you make a mistake is way better than most in this day and age.

Quality design, does what it says and does it well

I run a rack and Home Assistant at home. The rack needs cooling, and I want the cooling to be quiet and integrated into Home Assistant. This board helps to do exactly this: take a power plug, 4 PC fans, and integrate those together into Home Assistant.

The board is very well designed, a lot of effort has gone into crafting the features - from onboard power regulation (can power from 12V), to screw terminals to expansion IO headers (which allowed me to add a I2C screen with no hassle). It ships with essential documentation on pinouts and general instructions. Overall, I've had zero problems with it, everything works seamlessly. The example ESPHome firmware configuration in GitHub is very helpful as a starting point for customization (I've added ALARM detection logic, in case RPM drops unexpectedly).

Overall, very satisfied - a small, well designed solution that is surprisingly flexible. Thanks!

Great! Does what it says and does it well

I bought this for managing the fans in my network rack and it does a great job at that. Multiple probes allow for averaging the temperature so you can get a better idea of the overall temperature, and multiple fan ports allow me to both circulate and exhaust.

My only suggestion (and limitation of the board) is that the output could be higher. A lot of the high CFM exhausting fans I was looking at were well over the total limit of the board.

Thanks for the kind review. We surveyed high flow fans and fell upon the Noctua NF-A14 at 160 cfm which pulls 0.60 amps max and have run 8 of those on the board. We would be interested in what fans you are using. For our latest production run of the board we did a revision increasing the current handling and fusing to 12 amps which is only limited by the barrel power connector. For your application, if run into any tripping of the resettable fuse, let us know (esp32andmore@gmail.com)

Just what I was hoping for!

It had been a while since I wanted to connect my server closet fans to Home Assistant, so I could automate the fan speeds according to the environment temperature. After multiple unsuccessful tries to find an off-the-shelf solution, I stumbled across this offer on Discord. Installation was easy and straightforward, and I now have a tidy setup (thanks to the 3D printed enclosure option). Thanks, Frank, for the great product and all the care that went into it!

Awesome board

I'm using this in my server closet, replacing a simple PWM fan controller board with no real logic on it.
Setting it up with ESPHome was a blast, the GitHub page gave me all the information I needed.
Running smoothly since then.

Perfect 10

First of all the shipping was super fast, got the item within 2 days. I have been testing this board for a week now, and it works just perfectly. Previously I used to have a breadboard+buck converter for a similar console fan setup, it was all cluttered and not very safe. This board was suggested by someone in ESPHOME discord and I wanted to give it a try. This is a perfect 10 in my book, components used are pretty good, the ESP32 board is also solid, and No wifi drops yet. ( I have more than 8 ESP32s from various vendors most of them drop wifi, every hour. I think there are resistors in the board for the Dallas sensors, I use a long cable and a short one, but they never got disconnected.
So much thought process has gone into this design and a lot of expansion possibilities. I use an RGB PWM fan which I can control the light color and brightness depending on the fan speed.

Overall a very well-designed board, with many functionalities. Will buy it again. Great job Guys!!
