Compatibility

This module conforms to the RCBus specification v1.0 for RCBus-2014 and RCBus-Z80.

It functions with 40-pin backplanes but does not have access to the second clock as an alternative baud rate source. It also does not have access to output serial signals to the second pair of TX and RX pins. An RCBus-Z80 compliant backplane is required to create an IEI/IEO interrupt daisy-chain on the backplane rather than wires between modules.

The RCBus specification includes RCBus-2014 (both RC2014 standard 40-pin bus and RC2014 enhanced 60-pin bus) and also the full 80-pin RCBus. The 80-pin RCBus provides support for advanced Z80 features, such as the interrupt daisy-chain, as well as support for other processor families.

The Kit

This kit includes all the components needed to make the module, as shown in the first picture. Other modules and backplanes shown in the pictures are not included. You will require tools, solder, and cleaning materials to assemble this kit.

All the integrated circuits in this kit are new parts from major distributors in the UK or USA.

Compact tooling with minimal sacrifice.

I've been using Small Computer Central's designs for a long time and, let me tell you, these lines of 8-bit computers are among the best ever designed. This module combines the Serial and CTC modules, sacrificing only the customizable addressing space; opting for standard, hardcoded port addresses for each device.

This is a minimal sacrifice, though, as most of us will simply set the custom address to these hard coded locations on the standalone serial and ctc modules. If you're a developer who needs to interact with a wide range of unpredictable port addresses for peripherals, you will want to invest in the standalone modules.

If, however, you are a user or firmware developer seeking to contribute to current community standards, then this module conforms to those standards. It's smartly designed such that the counters can drive the serial line clocks, or use the system clock. An optional xtal footprint makes it useful for systems where you need an isolated CTC clock line, with appropriate jumpers to perform the isolation.

I am in love with the Small Computer Central Designs. Every new module I build is a learning experience, especially since I can juxtapose the designs to their predecessors, with which I have more experience. To see the evolution, the iterative improvements, and how the current product shines today fills me with such hope for the future of modern-8-bit compute.
