The BeagleBone Black is a great board, but it doesn't include a RTC. So, if it is not connected permanently to Internet (or not at all, as it is the case in deep embedded systems), the BeagleBone Black may loose the correct date/time.
The RTC Cape (it is the official cape by CircuitCo, the creator of the BeagleBone Black) adds an RTC for the BeagleBone Black.
It is very easy to mount, you just have to plug the cape on top of the BBB. It is also easy to include in your software installation if you read the documentation.
When the BeagleBone Black is connected to Internet, it can get the date and time from NTP servers. But when it is not connected to Internet (or if the connection is sporadic), you cannot get reliable timestamps if you use your BBB for data acquisition. In this case, the RTC Cape is a must for your application.
