My Brain-In-A-Jar Project

Continuing our Intel series, I'm happy to announce Retroshield 8088:

80C88 running in minimum mode (max mode is also supported if desired)
Seattle Computer Products 8086 Monitor (version 1.5 3-19-82) by Tim Paterson
4K RAM w/ Arduino Mega 2560, more than enough to learn x86 assembly using the monitor.
192KB RAM if used w/ Teensy adapter board, thanks to Teensy 4.1

Note: I designed the PCB to support both 80C88 and 80C86 chips. I'm releasing 80C88 code. Modifying the code for 80C86 is left to customers as homework :)

What do you get?

Future projects for interested

1) I looked into emulating the original IBM PC XT. It looks possible using teensy 4.1. I won't be able to do it for now because I want to finish hardware projects in the pipeline first. 2) PCB can support 80C86 instead of 80C88. If anybody is interested, this will be good software project to work on.

The easiest way to get programming on the 8088

Sure, you could breadboard this and have fun some weekend, but this carrier board makes this all extremely simple. It was supper easy to assemble (instructions were easy to follow), and the ability to plug in and out of the Mega means I can use it for other things, and then quickly plug this in when I want to do some programming. The monitor program gives you everything you need to dabble in exploring this historically important microprocessor. It was a real walk down memory lane relearning the addressing methods. Get one and have fun!
