A breakout board for the Microchip MCP79411 or MCP79412 Real-Time Clock/Calendar. The boards are hand-assembled in batches based on demand; if they are out of stock, backorders are accepted.

Details

The Microchip MCP7941x RTCs offer several advantages over other low-cost real-time clocks. Among these are on-chip calibration, dual alarms, power fail/restore timestamps, IEEE 48- or 64-bit Extended Unique Identifier (EUI-48 or EUI-64), 128 bytes EEPROM, 64 bytes battery-backed SRAM, 1.8-5.5V supply voltage and I2C clock frequency to 400kHz. Boards are shipped calibrated and running (set to UTC) with a fresh CR2016 lithium cell installed. Included documentation gives the RTC EUI ID and calibration register setting. Headers are provided but not soldered to the board to allow flexibility in connection.

I wrote an Arduino library to support the MCP7941x, which is available on GitHub. (For other applications, the MCP7941x uses a standard I2C interface.)

About Unique IDs (EUI-48 and EUI-64)

The only difference between the MCP79411 and MCP79412 is that the '11 is pre-programmed with an EUI-48 identifier while the '12 is pre-programmed with an EUI-64 ID. EUI-48 can be used as an Ethernet, WiFi or Bluetooth MAC address. The EUI-64 format is appropriate for ZigBee, IEEE 805.15.4, IPv6 or FireWire. Additionally, EUI-48 IDs can be converted to EUI-64; the library above has a function to do this.

Great module, great library, easy to use!

I finally found a project to build around this module. It was a snap getting the module working and making use of Jack's library and examples. I had the module running in about 10 minutes, no joke. I hope you get these back in stock so more folks can enjoy them. Also, board quality is top notch and assembly is truly outstanding (wished my boards looked this nice). If you want an RTC module, just buy this right now, ok? You won't regret it. Review Image

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad the RTC worked well for you. Interesting looking project, I wouldn't mind hearing more about it. I had a large order that wiped out inventory; more boards are on the way but most are already committed to working off the backlog, so I've ordered a second batch as well.

Great little RTC!

I was able to get this breakout board wired into my Arduino project in just a few minutes, and I had time synchronization in 2 lines of code. Great little package and very easy to use.

I've used the RTC's SRAM to record events and the EEPROM to store project settings, and the API has been very easy to use. I have not experimented with the advanced calibration features of the RTC yet, but I am delighted to have sub-second synchronized time for my project.
