A small word clock kit, with the simple components: LED/RTC/PCB, and 2 buttons… Simple and nice.This kit is originally on hackaday and has been authorized by the designer. All the hardware & firmware are open. We expect you to join us to play with the code and improve/add more features.

Why did you make it?

Just for fun

PS: Suggested by some customers: 1. This is "Kit" composed of 4 boards: 1 assembled/ programmed main boards; 2 internal bare PCB, and 1 word board. Besides, 4 small pins for customers soldering to cascade the 4 boards. 2. There the RTC need a small CR1220 battery,it is only for the RTC, you need USB power connected to make the LEDs blink. 3. Try to Hold the boards as tight as possible in assemble the 4 pins.

I love it! it's a perfect little clock for my desk

It's a tiny clock for a desk or office. programing it is a little strange(press and hold the H) and it does have some nice demos by pressing H. the micro usb comes out the side and is a pretty weak connection so be careful of that.

Great clock - I've got TWO now!

A fantastic clock!

The soldering will take you two minutes. There are no obvious instructions for setting the time but I found this on hackaday:

"press and hold both the H and M buttons simultaneously until "IT IS" goes out
H to set the hours M to set minutes (there no going back, only forward)
press them both again to exit out of this mode."

Pressing the M button will also adjust brightness.

Soldered,up and running in about five minutes.

Honestly one of the best things that I've purchased on Tindie. It has the absolute minimum amount of soldering to assemble. Overall functionality is great, save the already documented issue with the hour and minute buttons not being quite as responsive as I might like. Despite this, It's a great little clock that's ideal for a gift. The only major thing I would like to see would be an option to attach the USB connector in such a way that it projects toward the back since this would give some more options so far as mounting to some kind of frame is concerned- perhaps offering in a form where the connector is not soldered on to permit easy customization. The front PCB does diffuse the light into the adjacent letters a bit which might put off some folks, but I actually like the effect it produces. I might try making a new mask for the front out of something like etched brass or glass.

Really cute design, and easy to construct.

This is a really cute design, and very well done. Trivial to construct (only 4 solder connections). I received a unit that wouldn't set or save time and the seller was very responsive and quickly provided a replacement which works perfectly.

Highly recommended.

Good Value but not the kind of kit I thought

Good value. Works as advertised. I'd thought it would require soldering of components to main board but that was done already. I'd hoped to use this a practice surface mount soldering exercise. But, good quality and is as represented.

WHERE CAN I FIND A MANUAL THAT DESCRIBES HOW TO SET AND READ THE TIME DISPLAY?

Awesome little word clock

Assembly was simple, and it was up and running in minutes. The buttons sometimes don't respond on first press; I think there's a glitch with button detection in the code, probably a clock-timing thing. But with all the modes it has, and how great it looks, I would recommend this for anyone as a gift (to assemble or not). The only thing I'd like to see added would be an automatic time-setting option via usb or something. But that's only an issue until you get a battery for the RTC. Great little kit!

Absolutely Worth The Price

The item arrived (although strangely, the tracking # didn't work) very quickly by Asia-US standards. It was packaged in antistatic bag/foam. It didn't have any documentation, but between the website and Hackaday this was not a problem and in this Internet age, given the audience for the product, I don't think it would be worth it for anybody to include. "Building the kit" consisted of cutting off a resistor leg and tying together the board sandwich at the corners (I left the rear legs long as locators for how I intend to mount it). I like to build kits once in a while, but I must admit that the likelihood of me getting 100+ LED's "right" would be somewhere between none and zero. It probably would have cost MORE as a true kit and would have been headaches for the supplier.

The battery (apparently a CR1220) was not included but I understand why; this adds some shipping cost and drama. I got one locally because I didn't want to wait (and paid dearly for it).

The clock is small and not terribly bright at even the brightest settings, but it is very legible and was a real bargain; it looks great, and I'm working on a nice plexiglass stand for it. Thanks!

Cool Word Clock "Kit"

First , is a cool looking word clock, but the documentation could use some work, u need to watch the video's to figure out how it works (kinda). Programming the clock is possible i think , but there is no info to be found how ? But maybe its me, and maybe I am to much of a noob. But it god delivered , it works !

Excellent clock kit

I'm a big fan of blinky led projects and love the quality and work that has gone into this kit. Eventually finding the one video that shows you how to set the time is my only complaint. The instructions could be a little easier to locate, but other then that it is well worth the price and I would happily but other products from this seller in the future.

What a great little device but doesn't keep time well

First, I have to say how shocked I was to get this word clock for $10! I received the "kit" today and after soldering the (provided) header pins to the four corners of the board stack to hold everything together, it was ready to go. Soldering took less than 5 minutes. The build quality is fantastic and adding a backup battery (CR1220) was so easy with the solid battery holder on the back of the unit. The setup buttons are easily accessible while not detracting from the appearance of the clock. The clock works like a charm with all the features as described. The "animations" are a nice addition and the ability to change the brightness (at the cost of some light bleeding) is great. My little Word Clock is now powered by an unused USB port on my workbench and gives me the word time at a glance. Thanks Makerfabs for making this available at such a great price. BTW, it is a WORD clock, not a WORLD clock ;)

UPDATE June 2020: After running this clock for several months I now see that the time drifts, a LOT, to the point where it can be considered a toy but not a reliable clock. Too bad cause it looks great.
