What is it?

This is a USB to UART converter with a digital isolator on the RS232 side

Why did you make it?

I was using a cheap USB serial converter, but sometimes they didn't work correctly and I was losing time. So we decided to design our own customized board, with only the essential pins and the possibility to work at 1.8V. With the galvanic isolation and the possibility to work at different logic levels according to the target voltage.

What makes it special?

Thanks to the digital isolator MAX12931BASA+ the computer and your target board are electrically isolated.

The noise coming from your computer doesn't enter in your target board, this can be useful when you are working with sensible analog circuit.
The voltage levels of TX and RX are the same of your target board. This means that it doesn't matter if your board is working at 5V or 3.3V or 1.8V, the logic level are always correct!

Original FTDI FT230X: Compatible with almost all the operating systems and capable of variety baud rates of 300 baud to 3 Mbaud
Size of 40 x 13mm.
3kVrms digital galvanic isolators
Working at 1.8V up to 5V.
Tested in a climatic chamber from -20°C up to 80°C
TX and RX LEDs indicators.
Micro USB connector.
Standard 2.54mm 4 pins female header.
Protected by a transparent heat shrink sleeve.

Worth the modest cost for hassle free interfacing

Nice to have the confidence of a real FTDI chip with worry free level level switching and isolation. Very handy that Debug Board shows with detail when listing devices on USB ports. Had one kicking around for a while and bailed us out when upgrading from a Raspberry Pi4 to RPi5 in an application involving serial communication with a microcontroller. Unlike the RPi4, the RPi5 did not want to play easily with serial through the GPIO; popped in the Debug Board had we were up and running through a USB port in no time. Only "problem" is now have to order a couple more!

Great product

Works exactly as intended, and quick shipping. Proper FTDI chip with serial number, so you can distinguish it from other FTDI stuff on your bus.

Far smaller than expected.

The debug board is far smaller than I'd expected it to be, although the 0.1 in connector should give that away.
It is very well made, and works as expected.
Having a real FTDI chip makes interfacing to all host systems (linux,windows,mac) easy and reliable.

Great isolated UART

I purchased several to communicate with microcontrollers in an analog design where the microcontroller's ground was not Earth ground. This converter allows safe communication between the PC and the microcontroller. The product works great, required no setup and was working immediately. Was going to design my own version before I found these. Only complaint is that time from order until receipt in US was over 1 month.

Top! Very good product, useful to work safely with RS232

I used this product to insulate a serial working a 220VAC always without problems. It is plug and play and worked immediatly, connected it in few seconds to my board on live mains on one side and to PC on the other side without problems! No drivers needed
Really recommend it, the price is low compared to its value!
