Everywhere it is possible to purchase the small size 32mm x 32mm - 8x8 led matrix board kits, even on Tindie. You get a common cathode LED module 2 capacitors, a 10K resistor, a MAX7219 chip and socket, pin headers and a pcb. These are great they simply connect to an Arduino with VCC, GND, CLK, CS/LOAD, DIN and DOUT if cascading them.

In this case though size is an issue, they are limited to the 32mm square 8 x 8 modules. This board is an upscaled version with positions for 64 10mm LEDS at a pitch of 14mm (0.550") giving a character height of 110mm (4.33"). The board is 114mm (4.48") wide x 145mm (5.70") high. Green solder mask, 1.6mm thick, Hot air levelled, Lead free, 1oz copper, white silkscreen with 4 x 3.5mm (just over an 1/8th") fixing holes. All components are leaded. The best way to build up the pcb is to buy one of the kits for the 32mm square matrix remove the Matrix and the PCB and use the remaining components to build up this board, you will also need to buy 64 x 10mm single colour leds (10mm is the designed size but you can use smaller). Solder up using lead free solder, LED polarity is absolutely critical though ! One of the pictures shows a large scale football/soccer scoreboard that I made with these modules. Full build and software reference information are supplied with the pcb. Note the images on the documentation are shown with red solder mask on the pcb the REV B board you will receive has green solder mask. By buying more than one board you can cascade them and make large scale scrolling, animated or static signs. check out the youtube link to see a single module working.
