What is RC2014?

RC2014 is a simple 8 bit Z80 based modular computer. It is inspired by the home built computers of the late 70s and computer revolution of the early 80s. It is not a clone of anything specific, but there are suggestions of the ZX81, UK101, S100, Superboard II and Apple I in here. It nominally has 8K ROM, 32K RAM, runs at 7.3728MHz and communicates over serial at 115,200 baud.

As a bare minimum, you will need a CPU, ROM, RAM, Clock and Input/Output module. The RC2014 is designed in such a way that you can build your own modules to expand it. As such, if you have access to similar components, or have specific needs, you might not need all the items I have on offer.

What do I get?

This listing is for a kit of parts to build the Clock and Reset module only. For the rest of the modules, see my other products.

Full Kit - This includes all the components to build up the Clock module including header pins, chip sockets, logic chips Crystal, reset switch and passive components.

PCB Only - Yup, you guessed it. Only the bare PCB!

Please note that there is a choice of 2 clock speeds. A 7.3728Mhz crystal will run the CPU at 7.3728Mhz and give a baud rate of 115,200bps with a MC68B50 ACIA. If you have a CPU rated lower, or are using a MC6850 (no B!), or need a serial rate of 57,600bps, please select 3.6864Mhz

small board, simple function

I chose not to bother with the reset switch and its resistor, relying instead on the reset switch on my backplane

This board is very small and you should probably put the crystal in first, you really want as short as possible legs as possible on a crystal to avoid issues and when the crystal is flush with the board it interferes with the edge connector, which I had to basically sit on top of the flange of the crystals case. A board just a tiny bit larger and this wouldn't be an issue.

Care should be taken when locating this in the backplane as its plugged in half way along an edge connector

I'm not entirely sure this board wouldn't be better integrated into the CPU board, if you wanted to change clock speed at a later date you could always "mod on" a board like this to the serial IO module (which relies on this specific frequency) - it could be argued the serial module should have its own crystal... but there are pros and cons as always to each approach
