What is it?

A super simple Power supply to build to get your smaller modular or synth project up and running quick and easy. Comes with all the components to build the power supply. EXCEPT an AC-AC converter to convert from your countrys wall power to 12VAC. This is also a good soldering excercise if you are new to soldering. Look at the video first to see how easy it is and that you are capable of solder this together. Please be adviced that because of the smaller caps used in this simple psu, it is possible to introduce ripple if drawing too much power from it. But for smaller systems this should work just fine.

Why did you make it?

Power is crucial for any DIY build, but sooo boring to make. This simple build takes care of the problem quick, easy and cheap. It is not the best power supply you will ever have, but I have used this in my modular build and it has worked great.

What makes it special?

Its small it is cheap it is easy.

Nice little PSU with an issue

I bought two of those PSUs almost 3 years ago and I finally build one up for a small eurorack case. It is a nice PCB with a small footprint. But the first time I powered some of my modules with it I realized something is strange. There was a weird (cross) modulation type of effect on the output signals of the VCOs. I had another look at the board and remembered why I was a bit sceptical about the design and especially with the values of the 470uf filtering caps. My gut told me that this value is way too low. And yes, the value is too low to completly filter out the 50hz/60hz oscillation of the AC input and to prevent crosstalk between the modules. This causes all kind of weird frequency modulation in the system and becomes very much noticeable with VCOs. Luckily there is an easy fix for that issue. I soldered a pair of 3300uf caps in parallel with the 470uf caps and the problem was solved. No more weird fluttering and unstable sounds. Another thing to be aware of is the fact that there is no mounting hole on the pcb which can be a bit of an annoyance.

Did exactly what it said it would

Great little kit, if I could add one improvement it would be the inclusion of a jack to more easily fit a 12v AC supply - I had to cut the jack off one I had and just solder the wires on. I know I could do better, but i'd have to buy more parts and I'm being lazy :)

Very Happy

Very useful piece of kit

I recently purchased one of these to follow with the Modular in a Week series on YouTube by Kristian Blasol. The kit was very easy to assemble and works perfectly, very useful when testing circuits. If you are to be following this series I’d suggest buying two, as I wired one into my rack and realised it was a bit of hassle to then quickly test new circuits as I’d have to remove modules to access the power supply. I’d advise to also buy some JST XH two pin and three pin Male and female connectors to easily connect to this. Overall very happy with this product.

Very cheap, beginnerfriendly and good instruction

I am a beginner and with the video it was really easy to build! The only thing I forgot at the end was to switch the Multimeter to DC for the final measurement. It took me ten minutes to realize 😉
