What is it?

The Gris is the third Mutable Instruments module that I make in the "Modular in a Week" series. This is another "clone" that I have designed. It is as closely resembling the original in both design and parts, except for the fact that it is a through hole variant, using only throughhole components. One change is that instead of a 328 MCU, an Arduino Nano is used, since it has a 328MCU on the board. I also take advantage of the power regulator onboard the Nano to keep the parts count down on the Gris.

Why did you make it?

In my ongoing youtube Series "Modular in a Week" I am working through modules that you can do that is MCU driven. And after doing two STM32 variants of Mutable Instruments modules, I wanted to make the Grids aswell. And this is the result of that.

What makes it special?

Well if you want a fully functional Mutable Instruments Grids, but dont want to pay the huge prices for the original and you dont feel that Surface mount soldering is for you, then this kit could be an affordable way to go.

PLEASE OBSERVE IT IS SOLD WITHOUT THE ARDUINO NANO, WHICH HAVE TO BE SOURCED ELSEWHERE.

Some changes from things I say in the video is that you should use a MCP6002 or other Rail-to-Rail opamp, you might get a bit less function if you use LM358...

too dense build

The PCB is not labeled with values, component numbers are randomly oriented making it hard to find places.
PCB is populated too densely: jacks are mounted on top of components on the other side with minimal space between the metal parts of the jack and the component on the other side. And it is too dense to measure for short cirucuits - or to find and correct mistakes.
-> I cannot recommend this kit.
Kit was complete, PCB quality was good.

A Total Joy!

This is the second order. First GRIS I messed up. ( amateur error) I did not read the documentation before I started. ( I was just excited to solder) Anyway, I needed to order another PCB but didn't not need the face plate. (Let Kristian know) Kristian was awesome! Was super helpful and sent me the PCB and some extras. MI stuff is beautiful and I thank Kristian for figuring out through hole builds for people like me, just starting out and learning.

Early this year I was thinking about generating drum patterns, so I googled about it and then I found about `GRIDS` and this made convince to start playing with music creation again and dive into the Eurorack rabbit holde.

Emilie already stopped with Mutable Instruments by then so buying a new original one was out of scope. I could have bought a clone and played with software only derivatives, then I came here, solder through GRIS made with so much passion.

So finally I will built 2 myself, thank you Kristian!!

Very nice trough hole clone of MI grids!

Love the pig! Love the support and direct contact with the creator, Kristian on his discord! Love the simplicity of the build! Love the solution to the chip-ocalypse (little daughter boards for the chips that were only available as SMD).
