Read More…If you want to build your own Inkycal with PiSugar, this kit is definitely for you and is a more budget-friendly option for those who know how to solder.
It solves two main problems, designing a 3d-printed frame with the PiSugar and not having to cram a large driver board inside an already narrow-frame.
Thanks to the PiSugar board, it allows a run-time of approximately 23 days in combination with Inkycal with one update a day and no cables attached.
This kit includes the following; - 3d-printed frame in black and white - 24-pin universal e-paper driver board
Optionally, you can top up this kit with a PiSugar board too or ask us to solder the correct length of wires on the driver board.
The 3d-printed case is made up of three parts, the bezel, the back and the base:
It was designed by having the following features in mind: - 13mm height - USB-C connector on the left-hand side of the frame - wall-mountable via holes at the back - contains a base for placing on a desk - ventilation slots for passive cooling - path for cable when cable-operation is primary source of power and PiSugar is only a backup
This teeny driver board we designed, explained in more detail over here: https://www.tindie.com/products/aceinnolab/universal-e-paper-driver-board-for-24-pin-spi/ allows building a slim enclosure for the build and is also included in the kit.
In order to use this kit to build your own Inkycal, you will still require these parts, which are not included in the kit: - Raspberry Pi Zero W. This is very important as the WH version just won't fit - microSD card (min. 8GB) - 7.5" Waveshare e-paper display (800x480px) in three colours (black-white-red or black-white-yellow) - soldering iron - wires - PiSugar (if you didn't choose it from the options)
The assembly is pretty straight-forward (see the second image) and boils down to the following; 1) Soldering connections from driver board to Raspberry Pi Zero W 2) Assembling the PiSugar board with the Raspberry Pi Zero W 3) Peeling off the cover from the PiSugar battery to remove the magnets and metal plates. This reduces the height further to reach the max. 10mm internal height 4) Attaching thin, double-sided-glue to the PiSugar battery 5) Connecting the e-paper display to the driver board. The side with the flex-cable goes to the right 6) Press-fit the top part of the frame
