What is it?

Cactus Micro is our integrated developement board, we have mixed Arduino with WI-FI into a single board. It is targeted for makers to develop low power Internet-Of-Things (IoT) projects quickly and easily.

The revision 2 use hardware serial port Serial1 as default option. It also Added some jumpers for connect esp8266 GPIO. For some usage such as I2C.

Getting Started

Open Arduino IDE and choose board "LilyPad USB" to start playing with your Cactus Micro in just a few easy steps.

How it works

The ESP8266 chip communicates with ATMega32U4 through the hardware serial port Serial1.
The pin 13 is connected to pin CH_PD of ESP8266. Put the pin 13 high to enable ESP8266 chip.

Great Little Module

A really little module combining Arduino and the ESP8266. Only really two things I can fault with it:
1. Documentation - someone really has to up a fully verified step by step set of instructions to get the module up and running with AT firmware. I wasted almost 2 days on countless websites, and finally got some tips from the supplier.

2. Overheating. The esp8266 module seems to run really hot. It works fine, but the reliability has got to be seriously reduced by this heating effect.

Really nice unit to allow development of IoT things

I have had a lot of fun developing using the Cactus Micro Rev2. I'm using the ESP8266 as the communication agent (running ESP8266Arduino and using MQTT) and then will be using the regular Arduino (Atmel processor) for the physical I/O processing.

If you are using this module make sure yet get familiar the cactus-hw-serial and cactus-esp-programmer sketches to enable you to update and manipulate the ESP firmware and processor

Great Product

I have ordered four of these products with 2 different orders. Both orders arrived on time and was surprising how little the shipment cost was, knowing the product came all the way from China. I was able to solder the pins to the board and use them using the Arduino IDE on Windows as well as iMac. It is a great value for money with the WiFI chip and Arduino board all in one. The mini-USB cables were also very robust and work great!

Great product, and shipping

The documentation could use a little work, but otherwise its a great, small wifi Arduino. The shipping communication said I could track the package, but there was no tracking number, but otherwise the shipping was very fast.

This is a very valuable addition to microprocessor WIFI.

I appreciate the utter simplicity of the Cactus. To work with the ESP8266 module you need either two RS232 ports or software and hardware ports. The Cactus has two serial ports so communicating to the WIFI via serial AT commands is very simple ( read Serial, write Serial1). Implementing a server is a few AT commands and Cactus can be an access point or both server and AP. I did have trouble finding documentation although the Github ESP8266 library has some good discussions, but not targeted to the Cactus. The Cactus programs via Arduino (1.0.5 to 1.6.5) as an Arduino Lilypad and examples written for other Arduinos ( such as Github for the Pro ) only need the software port references replaced by Serial1( Serial is the USB computer port, Serial1 is the Cactus direct hardware port to the ESP8266) to function straight off. Firefox talks fine to a Cactus server as a quick check of function.

A really simple, very welcome addition to the WIFI/IOT stable, small, low-power and cheap as!

1) The pin connection is fixed.
2) It's hardware uart not software uart solution.

This little board is amazing, wifi and keyboard + mouse "emulation" allows one to think about a lot of crazy things that could be done.
The documentation is not completly noobs friendly and their website is sometimes quite slow or even not responding. Anyway I had reflashed the esp and was sending packets to the "interwebs" in after 30 min, but then again I'm also not a completely noob.

I suggest people using this to have a look at espduino and this example https://github.com/tuanpmt/espduino/blob/master/espduino/examples/rest/rest.ino

Pretty happy

I'm satisfied with the Cactus Micro v2. It was delivered quickly (shipped Monday, delivered that Friday to the UK). The boards seem to work well, although I've changed the firmware of the ESP to NodeMCU, rather than use the AT-based default firmware. I plan to use them as a "remote keyboard/mouse", so would be happier with an A-type USB connector, but the micro-USB is probably more suited to general use.
