What is it?

The SX1507, SX1508 and SX1509 are complete ultra low voltage 1.2V to 3.6V General Purpose parallel Input/Output (GPIO) expanders ideal for low power handheld battery powered equipment. This family of GPIOs comes in 4-, 8-, 16-channel configuration and allows easy serial expansion of I/O through a standard 400kHz I2C interface. GPIO devices can provide additional control and monitoring when the microcontroller or chipset has insufficient I/O ports, or in systems where serial communication and control from a remote location is advantageous

Why did you make it?

A customer asked me to look into this and boy am i glad i did. These chips are so cool and simple to use especially when using the Arduino Library. In a matter of seconds i can blink and fade a led.

What makes it special?

It is CHAINABLE! Meaning you can connect up to 4 of these together since its I2C and has 2 Address Lines. Thats a total of 64 leds controlled via 2 I2C pins or a nice sized keypad. It fits on a breadboard with enough space for at least 2 wires on each pin. Used along with my TinyLEDs its a cinch to test.

SX1509 16 Bit IO Expander

This SX1509 16 Bit IO Expander is just what I was looking for. It works Great with the arduino library. It really simplifies wiring up my projects and saves pins on my arduinos to drive a TFT display in 8 bit mode.
I also use the TinyLedx4 and 8 andthe I/O buddy and a 4x4 matrix keypad connected to the SX1509 16 Bit IO Expander.
