This kit turns my foot tall TARDIS storage and display box (on Printables) into an electronically interactive DIY centerpiece that is as cool as fezzes and bow ties! Slim profile backlighting and carefully developed top sign process developed for sharp, visually appealing effect.

In battery mode: -Replacing lid triggers random audio clip play from the series, as well as smoothly pulsing backlit window, backlit sign and top lights as long as clip plays, or 15 seconds, whichever is longer -Touching front bottom right panel triggers same play cycle, via concealed touch sensor. -This Atmega328P based project consumes a crazy low 15uA in standby, so batteries last for months. A year if using parallel 18650 batteries, triggering 6 times/day

In Lamp Mode: -Plugging in to 5v USB wall block disables battery, and fades sign and top light on. -Concealed touch sensor cycles lighting through off, top and sign, and all lights. -Replacing lid after snack stealing triggers audio and light cycle as in battery mode, and returns lighting to same state as before play cycle. -Removing wall power fades off lights and box reverts to battery power

Most electronics are concealed in false bottom, AKA the 'Brain Box'. No visible wiring, inside or out anywhere. The only visible evidence of electronics is the USB port in back, and 4 pin magnetic connector under lid for top light and trigger.

Electronics guide walks you through each step of this build process, including pictures. Obviously, basic soldering gear is necessary. Multimeter is HIGHLY recommended for testing connections, shorts and voltages. But also because DMMs are Gallifrey cool :-)

TARDIS storage box has internal storage volume roughly 4.7 x 4.7 x 7.5 inches.

YOUR time and space adventure involves printing parts per the printing guide, soldering connectors, capacitors and headers to the circuit board, and soldering the wiring and remaining pieces per the electronics and assembly guide.

Comprehensive 3D printing guide walks you through flow calibration for necessary fitment, recommended print settings and post processing (very little). Most pieces have self retaining fit, but a hot glue gun WILL come in handy.

Print height of the big box itself is 249.5mm, so majority of Who fans can print the largest file. If your build height is 250mm, and you modified with glass build plate, volcano nozzle or such, please undo such modifications prior to the Big Blue Box print.

Circuit board has: -Reverse Polarity Protection at the battery and USB inputs, including indicator lights that alert you that you got it wrong. -Keyed connectors to prevent plugging box components in backwards. -Current limiting resettable fuse -Polarity markings at all applicable through hole solder points -Is shipped pretested for basic functions -Preprogrammed with final firmware -Tested for proper firmware function and crazy low standby power (15uA... yes, I am VERY proud of that :-) -Extra through hole test/access points to tinker and add functions if you are versatile with microcontrollers

Why did you make it?

Developed this because there were NO satisfactory print designs that looked great, and included lighting and other functions, while maintaining space for usefulness, like storage. Signage and reasonably accurate features were also lacking. So designing in CAD from nothing, and including elegant solutions for printed parts, electronics and wiring and great visual and audio performance was paramount. No compromises. The final design needed to be worthy and appealing in every aspect, while being easy enough to print, solder and assemble for a relatively new hobbyist.

Like the Big Blue Box itself, there are none like this. It is designed for the Maker to proudly display, use, and take out on gaming nights.
