Read More…This is the 2022 eChallengeCoin. It is a challenge coin with 3 interactive challenges you solve using the LEDs, touch sensors, and the piezo buzzer. It also has 3 story challenges you solve through the UART interface, and bonus(es?) to unlock.
It comes fully assembled and ready to challenge your skills! It uses a standard CR2032 coin battery (included) and comes in a protective coin case.
IRL Events: There is an optional badge holder so you may wear your 2022 eChallengeCoin with geek pride at conferences, work, or a night on the town!
Everything about the eChallengeCoin provides clues and misdirection.
It even has 3 demos to help you pass the time when you are not working on the challenges, LED animations (because everyone like blinking LEDs), the touch sensor demo (which is great for getting practive with the touch input), and the game of Craps!
The eChallengeCoin has become an annual event, starting with the inaugural 2020 eChallengeCoin. I work on ideas throughout the year - coming up with new interactive challenges and a new installment from the Adventures of Sara Cladlow story challenge series.
If you are familiar with the traditional challenge coins - which signify a group of individuals or a significant event - then think of the eChallengeCoin as an electronic creation for anyone interested in technology, social engineering, InfoSec, or cyber security. Even if you are not in any of these roles, the eChallengeCoin is a pocket sized puzzle to test you skills.
Months of design and planning go into the annual eChallengeCoin. It's exhausting but I really like the challenge (pun?).
The 2022 eChallengeCoin is about the size of a traditional challenge coin and is designed to be carried around in a pocket. It's just 44mm in diameter and the case only adds 10mm. It fits easily in a pocket but is also worthy of display. It is very energy efficient and will run off a single standard CR2032 coin battery for several weeks.
... and it's not the first ...
The 2020 and 2021 eChallengeCoins introduced The Adventures of Sara Cladlow. The 2022 eChallengeCoin brings the third story in the series.
In the story, Sara encounters challenges which you must solve to continue. The story is accessed through the coin's UART connection - using the standard 0.1" pin connector near the bottom. The connector is curved so a pin connector should stay in place without the need to solder!
Details and a video about the UART interface eChallengeCoin are available on the AoSC website.
You can learn more about the 2022 eChallengeCoin at the website. Check out the videos too. Also check the videos for the previous eChallengeCoins for tips on on the backshell and the "skip" feature.
Note: The 2022 eChallengeCoin has a tiny piezo buzzer which is used for the second interactive challenge. To make it fit, it needed to be very small. Because it’s very small, it isn't very loud. The volume of the buzzer gets a boost when the eChallengeCoin is powered from the 3V and GND pins of the UART connection.
