Read More…Toaster came about when I wanted a simple breadboard power supply that could power my standard 3.3V / 5V digital circuits such as a microcontroller, but would also be able to run some analog circuitry at the same time. Since most breadboards these days seem to have dual supply rails, I decided to make something to fit the need and so Toaster was born!
Toaster is simple to use, simply plug it into your breadboard and then into a USB port or charger. Toaster will then provide you with 3.3V and 5V power supply rails as well as a variable 5V to 16V power supply rail. All from a single 5V source!
Toaster uses a really neat piece of electronics called a DC to DC converter which allows a smaller voltage to be boosted up to a larger voltage. In this case, the 5V input from the USB port can be boosted anywhere up to 16V. Fantastic for powering all sorts of analog circuits! This voltage step up does come at a cost however, the higher the voltage that you want, the more current the Toaster needs to draw from the USB port to achieve that voltage. Check out the table below to see the maximum current for each voltage setting.
There is an inbuilt 1.1 Amp resettable fuse for circuit protection as well as a power on LED. The Toaster accepts USB input from either a micro USB or mini USB cable (which is not included). The higher the quality cable you use, the better since good quality cables can handle a higher current draw from your USB port.
For those working with Fritzing, I have a 'virtual Toaster' available for download which you can import to play around with. You can download that here: Toaster Fritzing Design File

Please note - this product ships directly from my manufacturer in China. Budget Airmail starts at $6USD however this could take up to a month to arrive depending on your location. EMS shipping is the next step up but that jumps to $23USD which is a huge gap. However the option is there if you want your items quickly. Shipping takes place each Monday, Wednesday and Friday (unless there is a public holiday).
