What is it?

This is a toroid-less Joule Thief which operates from a single 1.5V alkaline battery and drains it down to around 0.8V. It will turn on when there is no light and will work for several days on a new battery (depending on setting and battery)

Why did you make it?

This is one of those things you build just for fun! This is the new version which is as small as it can be to fit practically anywhere!

What makes it special?

Tiny Thief makes a great night light, is small and can fit in many "cases" and can "recycle" otherwhise "used" batteries. Tiny Thief is only 14x16mm

SOME SOLDERING REQUIRED

list text hereYou will need to supply a battery and battery holder and solder its leads to the Tiny Thief power pads. ANY 1.5V alkaline can be used (AAA, AA, C and even 1.5V coin-cells but those wouldn't last long).
The supplied Photoresistor can be soldered directly on the pcb or using wires.. if soldered on the pcb, it would be best to bend it so it does not look directly to the onboard LED .... alternatively, an ULTRA HIGH BRIGHTNESS white LED is also supplied.. you can solder this on the board or using wires

tiny.. and kinda cute

Besides working as advertised and looking well made it's an interesting device to show to friends.
i also like the ecological aspect - using up old batteries is a good thing to do if you can not avoid using them.
example use: one of these got attached with neodym magnets to a fire extinguisher in my lab, so it's easier to grab it in the case of an electrical failure.

Long lasting!

These are handy little lights, great as a night light for camping...as they're not too bright. I've stuck a tiny magnet on them so they can be stuck anywhere. I have also found a single full AA to last for many days, very efficient indeed!

Excellent little light

I bought these to use in an area with poor lighting, not really knowing what to expect. They are a delight. Basically they switch on one the light from other sources dims. They definitely are a good way to use up batteries that otherwise apart spent. I have one light going for 3 days on what seemed to be a dead battery. The light is quite bright but not too bright. Great little items
