What is it?

This board is inserted between the video chip and its socket in one of the vintage computers using the TMS9918A/TMS9928A/TMS9929A. These are the ColecoVision, the MSX series, the TI-99/4 and many others. The board monitors all the digital communication and re-creates a semi-digital output signal. This output signal (we call it 'lumacode') can then be flawlessly upscaled to a pixel-perfect HDMI signal using an RGBtoHDMI device or something with equal capabilities.

Why did you make it?

This board was intended to extend my existing series of Lumacode boards.

Kit content

The mod board comes with a black RCA jack and a length of 2-wire cable.

Installation

As there are very many different machines using such a chip, you need to use your own judgement on how to insert the board. When the video chip is socketed and there is enough space above it, it is as simple as just inserting the board and solder a video wire to the outputs. Other installations may require to desolder the video chip first. More complicated installations may even require to add the board to the underside of the mainboard. This I needed to do with my ColecoVision (see documentation link).

Converting a Sanyo MSX1 MPC-100 was a breeze!

I wanted to get finally a iper-clear picture, but still on my beloved CRT via RGB. I bought TMSdigitizer (was very easy to install to the MPC-100. The original video IC was already socketed, but I preferred to install a more modern socket before installing the TMSdigitizer and back the original IC).
Result? Amazing.
