Not all APA102 strips are the same and some are incompatible with the pin-out of the PCB. These strips are fully tested to make sure these are compatible. Some of these strips might have small pieces of cardboard glued to the back to make a stronger connection.
Depending on the wearable you like to create, different length strips can be used. Strips can be cut as well when needed. See the sample templates on Hackaday, or see the picture above, to get a list of LED strips required. For your own project you can use the 1 meter option. Each meter has 60 LED's and can be cut to length. Glue a small piece of cardboard (provided with the strip) to the back of the LED strip to get a stronger connection to the board.
