What is it?

The world of techwear is constantly evolving, and the newest trend in jewelry is no exception. The attiny1616 microcontroller has been used to control a beautiful set of Fibonacci earrings that are powered by hybrid super capacitors. These earrings have 104 LEDs per side which will light up your face with their vibrant colors for over 16 hours at a time - all while being recharged in only 6 minutes!

Why did you make it?

I have been looking for alternatives for disposable coin cell batteries that I used on wearables and these new hybrid supercapacitors were the answer. I created the original Fibonacci earrings with Zinc-Air batteries last year, and those were a big success, but these earrings use supercapacitors instead of batteries. I rewrote the code to make the wearable very energy efficient and as a result the power consumption is under 1mA on most modes. This allows the use of a super capacitor where the energy storage is much lower compared to a battery.

What makes it special?

These Supercapacitors can be recharged quickly (within 6 minutes after running for 10 hours) without any degradation in performance over time, like with traditional LiPo batteries. The capacitors are able to keep the wearable powered for at least 10 hours, and after that you just plug it into an outlet for a recharge! Super capacitors are much safer than traditional batteries and they can be charged up to 500,000 times without any harm or damage to them. There is a selection button on the back that allows the user to select one of the following modes:

• Demo Mode, a pre-programmed sequence that will run over and over again
• Random Mode, a random generator will create the patterns
• Party Mode at 120bpm, random patterns updating at a 120 bpm rate (recommended for House music)
• Party Mode at 140bmp, random patterns updating at a 140 bmp rate (recommended for Drum & Base, Techno)
• Theater Mode, Demo mode but at the lowest brightness so that it is not distracting others
• Manual Mode, set your own Fibonacci Number, Number of spirals, speed and brightness

These earrings do require an USB-A to USB-C cable, or a USB-C powered source. This first release of these earrings cannot be recognized by high current USB chargers (yet), so will not charge if those are used (for example a laptop or USB-C phone charger).
