You may have heard of Nixie tubes, but have you heard of Numitrons? Numitron displays are cousins to the equally unique Nixie displays used before the introduction of LEDs. While Numitron tubes have the same beautiful glowing orange appearance as Nixie tubes, they operate at only 5 volts rather than the 170+ volts Nixie tubes require, making them simpler to power and safer to use in a kit.
This clock uses four rare Russian IV-9 Numitron tubes, manufactured by the Reflektor company in the former USSR, to display the time. This was the same company that produced the popular IN- series Nixie tubes. The clock runs off of an ATMega328 processor programmed using the Arduino IDE. Timekeeping is provided by an included DS3231 real-time-clock IC, and the tubes are driven by the TPIC6B595 shift register IC.
While the clock is preprogrammed and ready to be plugged in or assembled out of the box, it was also designed to be hackable. The annotated source code was designed to be easily modified, and a female header breaks out one digital pin, along with 5v and ground, for connecting additional devices such as sensors. The ATMega micro controller can be easily reprogrammed using an Arduino board and the Arduino IDE.
NOTE: First image shows the old board design. Additional pictures show the newly revised version, with the red circuit board, which is being sold.
