Features of the OPL3 Duo

The OPL3 Duo gives you almost limitless possibilities to play with OPL2 and OPL3 audio synthesizers. Whether you want to build your own MIDI synthesizer, playback tracked music or video game music files, or experiment with the OPL3 chip, the OPL3 Duo can do it all!

Works with any Arduino, Teensy, Raspberry Pi, Node MCU, or other Arduino compatible boards with SPI and 5 free digital IO pins
Works with either 5v or 3.3v
Fully OPL2 compatible
Up to 36 2-operator channels
Up to 12 4-operator channels and 12 2-operator channels simultaneous
Up to 10 simultaneous drum sounds in percussive mode
The software can address each YMF262 individually or treat both as one OPL2 or OPL3 with up to 36 channels

Example projects

The examples that are included with the Arduino OPL2 library will get you started quickly and show you how to program and use your OPL3 Duo. You can use the examples as the basis for your own projects or use them as they are to:

Build your own OPL2 or OPL3 based synthesizer the way you want it
Compose your own music with the Tune Parser that plays music from simple text strings
Play video game or tracker music files such as DRO, IMF, RAD, VGM
Connect the OPL3 Duo to a Teensy++ 2.0 or later to create a MIDI synthesizer
Use it as a real sound card with DosBox (requires a custom DosBox build)

What you will get

When you order the OPL3 Duo you will get a fully assembed and tested board that is ready to go! A small instruction leaflet is included to show you how to connect the board and install the software as well as some adhesive feet that you can stick to the bottom of the board.

Below is an example of the OPL3 Duo playing a MIDI file from the DOS game Descent. The OPL3 Duo is connected to a Teensy 3.6 that is running the MIDI example that is included in the Arduino OPL2 library.

What a joy!

The OPL3 Duo works exactly as advertised and the examples are very easy to get working. The Arduino library seamlessly gives access to all voices so you don’t have to track and manage which chip is playing.

Does what it promises! Very good product!

I had OPL2 board already, so I had pretty good idea already about what to expect. It’s easy to wire and the sample code is a good starting point for own projects like VGM jukebox and FM synths.

Awesome board!

My plan is to make a diy version of Akemie's Castle, an FM synthesizer using YMF262 chips. While researching the chips, I discovered this product, and ordered it. It came within 1-2 weeks to the US, and I am amazed it survived international shipping. All the examples work perfectly out of the box! Together with the awesome library of examples from DhrBaksteen's Github page, I think my project will be very feasible. Great product and great value, brought to the Arduino ecosystem!

Works Great!

It works as advertised and the documentation is really well put together. Integration was easy and the sound is great!

Again an excellent product

After previously having bought the OPL2 board, couldn't resist buying the OPL3 Duo. Excellent board quality again, and very easy to setup with the instructions and examples provided. Got my DRO code ported from the OPL2 version in less than five minutes. Shipment was fast, but then again, I live in the Netherlands too, so no crossing borders.

double the fun!

I admittedly haven't really had too much of a chance to play with this board beyond example sketches to just verify it works, but side-by-siding the demo song against the opl2 audio board, i imagine it must be what it felt like to upgrade a sound blaster 2.0 to an awe32 or adlib gold.

Better analog amp quality than OPL2 audio board.

It takes 1 month to get board.I think covid-19 situation may affect delivery processes. It is better to provide more option for shipping ( track is required )
Beside of that, overall quality is very good. I love to hear FM sound from OPL3 using my arduino.
