The mod adds a switchable operating system to any Behringer Virtualizer (1000P or 1024P) or Modulizer (1200P or 1224P), so you can use both sets of effects in the single unit. You also get a system reclocking knob that changes the processing speed of the effects over a very wide range.
To pre-empt a torrent of 'will this work with my....' questions, the mod works with the DSP1000P / DSP1200P and the DSP1024P / DSP1224P. We have two different kits available, one for the original 20 bit DSP1000P / DSP1200P versions, and another for the later 24 bit DSP1024P / DSP1224P ones. This kit will not turn one of the 20 bit models into a 24 bit one.
As the Behringer Virtualizer and the much rarer Modulizer effects units are exactly the same machine, just with a different operating system EPROM chip, we have produced a mod that puts both operating systems on one larger capacity EPROM and lets you switch between them. Effectively this gives you both machines in the one case, giving you access to the effects from both units.
You seem to be able to save user effects in both the Virtualizer and Modulizer modes without them messing up when you change mode, which is a little strange when you consider how the memory is used in these things, but we aren't complaining! You have to make the switch between modes with the unit turned off to reboot the OS, or else it tends to crash wildly!
The other mod is a reclocking knob as found on many other machines we have modded. Essentially this removes the onboard system clock and replaces it with a variable clock controlled by a knob on the front panel. This means the processing of effects can be slowed down or sped (or is it speeded?) up at will. It will extend the reverb and delay times to a grungy degree way outside of what would normally be possible. Reverbs can be altered from short metallic ambiances to massive washes of glacial disconnected sound just by turning the knob, while the speed of the delays can be continuously controlled and wildly pitched up and down at will. Some of the best reclocking effects can be created using the stranger presets such as the ring modulator, vocal distortion, and vocoder. Literally playing the reclocking knob while these effects are active takes them well out of their safety zone into something more organic and deeply unpleasant. As the reclocking knob also controls the clock rate of the converters, it also changes the sample rate of the incoming audio. At higher than normal clock settings the audio quality is actually better than the stock machine! You may have problems with external midi control when the clock speed is too far from the original setting, but who uses midi on a Behringer FX unit?
The kit consists of the Behringulizer 2000 PCB with a pre-installed custom dual operating system EPROM and reclocking circuit, an OS switch, a C100K reclocking pot, a knob, and some stickers to label the mods on the front panel. You will have to supply your own wire and there is a small amount of soldering involved, but installation is an easy job and should be suitable for anyone with a little soldering experience.
PLEASE NOTE: There are two separate kits available. One is for the DSP1000P / DSP1200P, and the other is for the DSP1024P / DSP1224P. Please make sure you select the correct kit for your unit.
If you want to check out the full list of effects and parameters available on both operating systems, you can download the Virtualizer 1000P manual from HERE, and the Modulizer 1200P manual from HERE.
Check out some demos below, including a somewhat disturbing one of the Behringuliuzer 2000 processing a 1980's Irish Catholic guide to sex.
