What is it?

PD Buddy Wye is a tiny (25×17 mm) circuit board that turns one USB Type-C upstream-facing port into two: one for USB 2.0 data, and one for USB Power Delivery. This allows users of the PD Buddy Sink to see what voltages and currents their power supplies can provide, and negotiate new power in real time.

Since it's just a passive splitter, there's nothing about the Wye that's specific to any particular device. I sometimes use it for other things, like fast-charging a smartphone with a wall charger while transferring files by USB 2.0.

Why did you make it?

While developing firmware version 1.1 for the PD Buddy Sink, I needed to plug the device into both my computer and a standalone power supply at once. With standard cabling, that's not possible, so I designed this board to enable me to do that.

What makes it special?

The combination of a PD Buddy Sink and Wye makes a very inexpensive way of verifying a USB PD charger's capabilities. This is important because there are so many chargers on the market that don't comply with the power rules in the USB PD standard. This makes the unfortunate reality that not every P watt USB charger can fully power every device that needs ≤ P watts. Other options for reading a USB charger's capabilities cost hundreds of dollars, so the Sink+Wye combination makes it affordable to check that your power supply can really do what it's supposed to.

Multi-purpose!

Got this initially to test USB-C PD power supplies with the PD Sink...but when I got a new car with Android Auto I discovered it can be used to fast-charge a phone from a separate PD capable supply while using Android Auto on a head unit that doesn't support fast-charging.

Head unit -> UFP J2
PD car charger -> Power J1
DFP+Power P1 -> cellphone

To clean it up a bit, I'd also get a USB-C female/female coupler and put a longer single cord going to the phone so the "Wye" and other cables can be tucked away out of sight.

Worked perfectly for my needs!

Bought this so that I could connect my phone to my car stereo for Android Auto while connected to a different power source to quick charge simultaneously. It does exactly what I wanted, and shipping was quick.

Board has intermittent contact to power socket

Seems my board slipped quality control. Power socket won't work without applying pressure on the top.

I hope I will be able to fix it with a heat gun.

Ahh, sorry! I tried to clean the excess rosin flux off some of the earlier boards I built, and in the process some may have made its way into the connector. You could try cleaning the connectors by soaking the board in a small dish of isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes, then blowing the connectors dry with compressed air to remove any dissolved flux. If that doesn't fix the problem, please contact me for a replacement. I don't try to clean the excess flux from the boards anymore, so the problem shouldn't happen with new units.
