This is a USB isolator that isolates USB host from the USB peripheral. For example, an audio interface plugged into a computer via USB host, will pick up digital and ground noise, passing this into the analogue audio output. An isolator separates the host port from direct connection via the data lines and the 5V/ground power lines, removing noise entering via the USB cable. The isolation IC will isolate electrostatic discharge (ESD) up to 5.7kV and the DC-DC converter up to 1kV, although this isn't tested and it isn't designed for industrial usage.

This USB isolator will support USB 2.0 hi-speed 480Mbps as well as 1.5Mbps and 12Mbps. All sub-$50 to $100 isolators will only support lower speed USB 1.1 - 1.5Mbps and 12Mbps (so-called "Full Speed") and won't necessarily provide external power.

Please note that the USB specification requires that 5V at up to 500mA is supplied from the host to the peripheral, the external power input will allow up to 1A to pass to the peripheral if it demands it. Use a short, good quality USB cable to connect from the host (the computer usually) to the isolator. Many long cables will lose up to 0.7V and the isolator will have a poor performance.
