We keep detouring into component side projects... many of these things are not readily available in internal-use formats, though (low profile/volume). Maybe others will find some of these useful, too. Here is another:

Based on the Monoprice¹ SlimRun cable (probably the slimmest and most flexible mainstream cable available), we developed a modified short-body RJ45 plug which makes for an even lower-profile cable: a 2.6 mm diameter cable with plugs projecting only 3.3 mm from the socket. We also improved several other characteristics, with the overall goal of creating a better cable for internal use in projects built from off-the-shelf components, especially when space is at a premium.²

The base cable is described by Monoprice³ as Cat6, 550MHz, and UTP (unshielded), with 32AWG pure bare copper. We add short-body heads with a cutout so the cable exits the plug laterally, as flush to the RJ45 socket as physically possible. The RJ45 plugs we use are made specifically for small AWG wiring⁴, so unlike others' attempts, electrical contact and pull-out resistance are competent.

We also treat the cable's external jacket with a softening agent to increase flexibility slightly more than the original, and pot the cable entry to the plug with cyanoacrylate, which significantly improves pull-out resistance. The original Monoprice plugs are potted with synthetic rubber, which does not adhere to the cable at all, meaning original pull-out resistance is literally just the conductors' tensile strength. For 32 AWG lines, this is virtually non-existent.

Note (Plugs): the "ORIGINAL" option in ordering options for start/end plug-type indicates only plug orientation similar to the original cable, not component origin (ie, straight-through). It may be either the Monoprice cable plug or our own of the same orientation, depending on where we are in our cable stock when we assemble the cable. Also, setting the "END" ordering option to "NONE" will make it a pigtail.

Note (Length): the length you order is the cable cut length before the heads are attached. Plug-face-to-plug-face/exposed cable length will necessarily be slightly smaller. If you order the 50 ft. length - which is the base from which we fabricate these - it will necessarily be: a) whatever Monoprice³ calls 50 ft, and b) less some small amount due to replacing the heads.

Note (Configuration): if you don't know what a cross-over cable is, you definitely do not need one.

⁴ Many claim you cannot put aftermarket RJ45 heads on stranded-core cables. This only true of the standard full-size plugs. Note that even short-body plugs are often sized for standard AWG conductors.
