Read More…EPDiy is a driver board which talks to affordable E-Paper (or E-Ink) screens, which are usually sold as replacement screens for E-Book readers. 10 USD price reduction for the first batch since the placement of the FPC connectors needs to be slightly corrected.
The FPC connectors on board supports following displays:
ED060XC3, Kindle paperwhite 1, 1024x758 & FrontLight LED driver (IO11) This display can be added since I still have some units. Note that this is so you get both PCB & display together. I've no gain since it's the same price. If you find it cheaper just make sure it's the ED060XC3 with touch and front-light. The only benefit of buying it here is that it comes pre-tested and with an LVGL demo installed.
EC060KH5/KH3, Eink Kaleido, with support for two channels of PWM front light (IO11 & IO12) Please note that to try color you need to use s3_color_implementation branch in epdiy repository. Only for the EC060KH5 the color array is implemented.
At launch last week of April 2024 there is only one unit available since I'm waiting for the ED060XC3 displays to come so I can add 4 units more next week, additionally with 2 displays in stock (Adding 34 USD for the optional 6" ED060XC3)
Please make sure your touch IC is this model otherwise it won’t work for now. Contacts in the FPC yes but we reverse engineered only one model of Kindle paperwhite so far that’s why I recommend to buy this with display included.
Because many developers that bought my other controller epdiy v7 wanted to drive also a 34 pin 6 inches display.
This enables also to make UX interfaces using LVGL or even making your own e-book reader loading the ePub files from the MicroSD on board.
epdiy uses open source timing waveforms that work mostly alright for all the supported eink displays, but do not expect this to be like a professional Eink controller (That would cost probably the same or in some cases 3x the display)
Why is that? Because official timing waveforms are actually delivered every time you purchase an EINK display officially and are tunned to that specific batch and display that you are purchasing. On top of that the controllers you get from them cope to that precise timings (microseconds) of the waveform. This timings specify how many "darken" or "whiten" phases (+15 or -15 V) are sent to each FET gate. This does not meant the controller won't drive your epaper correctly but for certain models, the grayscales might be different, or compared to the dedicated EINK controller can be slightly slower.
TIMINGS:
Kaleido display full update 550 ms
Kindle ED060XC3 full update 200 ms
Soon more in YouTube
Cheaper version without Kindle touch or Frontlight
For those seeking just to use the 6” display I still have some good working boards of release 1.0 like already mentioned they do not have touch connection for Kindle! Only for those seeking to make a photo frame without touch
