The Open qByte is an open-source, affordable, and reliable 8-tube isothermal fluorimeter designed for a range of biotechnological applications. The device is capable of maintaining a constant incubation temperature while simultaneously detecting fluorescence in real-time, making it a highly versatile tool for various scenarios, such as standalone nucleic acid tests, enzyme activity assessment, and studying bacterial viability.
A complete description of the device can be found in the GitLab repository of the project.
The Open qByte was developed to address the challenges of accessibility and affordability of scientific instruments, particularly in the field of biotechnology. Existing solutions are often complex and expensive, which limits their use to well-funded laboratories. By creating an open-source, cost-effective, and production-ready isothermal fluorimeter, we aim to democratize access to scientific instruments and enable decentralized science in Nucleic acid research, cell-free production, and whatever other cool things you want to explore with this tool :)"
Affordable and accessible: The Open qByte offers a competitive solution for researchers, bio-producers, and healthcare professionals in low-resource settings.
Open-source and customizable: The device's design and documentation are openly available, allowing users to adapt it to a broader range of biotechnological applications and contribute to the project's development.
Compact and lightweight: The device is designed for portability and ease of use, with a small footprint and multiple reactions in parallel using 8-tube strips.
Portability: The Open qByte is not only compact and lightweight, but it can also be potentially powered by standard USB-C external batteries, making it even more portable and suitable for fieldwork or remote locations without access to a stable power source.
Versatile connectivity: The Open qByte features configurable power supply options (9V or 12V with 3A, USB-C connectivity) and Wi-Fi connectivity for remote control and data sharing.
High performance: The device has been benchmarked against commercial devices (Thermocyclers, spectrophotometers...), showing comparable results while offering lower production costs and greater accessibility. It has also been validated in diverse real-world scenarios, demonstrating its reliability and accuracy.
The development of this project has been funded by the Learning Planet Institute, the Tsinghua-Cambridge Collaborative Grant for COVID Diagnosis, and the Gathering for Open Science Hardware (GOSH) Collaborative Development Funds 2022.
This process was greatly accelerated by the use of GitHub Copilot, which significantly sped up the software development.
