What is it ?

ESL Blasters currently being sold have black soldermask with gold plating

The ESL Blaster is a USB high-speed infrared transmitter especially well suited to update segment and e-paper based Electronic Shelf Labels / price tags of one particular brand ;-) These specific IR tags can be easily identified by the presence of a small black window next to their display.

They use a proprietary protocol with a high frequency carrier which IrDA and "consumer IR" devices can't support.

How can it be used ?

With a computer. OS-agnostic python tools are provided, as well as a simple Windows GUI utility to update e-paper tags.
With the free and open-source PriceHax app on an Android phone. It can be installed from the Play store or via the provided APK. No ads, tracking or data leaking bullshit.
As a standalone programmable remote powered by a coin cell. A charging circuit is embedded if needed.

The open-source firmware can also be modified at will thanks to the embedded USB bootloader, allowing easy upgrades and hacks without any risk of bricking. Turn the ESL Blaster into a TV-B-Gone, a generic IR remote transmitter, an USB keystroke injector...).

Why ?!

For experimentation, for fun, to mess with stores, to make nerdy badges (the tricolor e-paper tags look really cool !)...

Notes

If you want to use a regular CR2032 coin cell, be sure to disable the charge circuit (see documentation on Github). A LIR2032 rechargeable cell is recommended for their higher nominal voltage, allowing a greater transmission range.

Very good pcb design

Well designed PCB , correct spacing for power traces even if you are sticking a pcb in a USB port. Avoids mis insertion and usb errors. Power circuit for a rechargeable coin Li cell. Pre programmed IC which I didn't expect. Up loadable payload via serial, blasts it at a press of a button.

Belle construction

L'ESL Blaster est de très bonne conception et fonctionne parfaitement.
J'aime tout particulièrement le fait qu'il soit autonome et qu'il intègre un module de charge de l'accu.
