What is it?

The Tiny Dragonfly is a DIY surface mount soldering kit with 20 LEDs, 5 resistors, 1 capacitor and an ATtiny13. It can be powered using USB, 4.5 V battery packs or a CR2032 cell. The LEDs are independently controlled by an ATTINY 13 using charlieplexing. Demo code, which displays the a random blinking pattern shown in the youtube video, comes preprogrammed on the microcontroller. New code can be uploaded to the device with AVR dude using a Bus Pirate, a AVRisp mk II or similar. It is not Arduino compatible.

Why did you make it?

My mom is a school teacher who loves festive decorations, and encouraging her students (particularly young women) to get involved in STEAM. The best way to tell a young woman that she can be an electrical engineer one day is to have her build electronics designed by a woman. My niece and nephews also love soldering and electronics, and want a new kit every time I see them.

What makes it special?

It is both artistic and a functional circuit. It can be turned into a piece of jewelry by printing out a coin cell necklace clasp.

High-quality PCB. Nice online instructions.

My wife is a big fan of anything dragonfly and she is going to flip out at this one! I should have paid more attention when ordering as I didn't realize this was a kit that I'd be soldering together, but I'm up to the challenge and I'm looking forward to the beautiful result. I ended up watching more videos from this maker, and learned a lot. Thank you!
