What is it?

This is a PCB to support a 2048 byte memory mapped Visual Display Unit. Output is composite video via an RCA socket. Format is 32 rows by 64 columns. Address decoding is provided on board and the 2k VDU Memory can sit in a valid 2k block of the host SBCs 64k. Links allow flexibility. Data, Address and control bus + power are applied via right angled edge pins compatible with our 65C02 SBC and Floppy Disk IF PCBs. A suitable Monitor ROM will need to be programmed to use the VDU as the primary output device.

Why did you make it?

The final piece in my nostalgia experience and I had an early design just using 1k memory as per the default OSI Superboard 2 and Compukit UK101. I remember how much more aesthetically pleasing the 32x64 format was and felt it was a more desirable project.

What makes it special?

Anyone who has a 6502 or 65C02 based computer can add a VDU for very little cost. Components are everyday 74 series ttl and widely available. You cannot buy these VDU boards anywhere else.

Excellent Product! It works in the USA too!

I am very impressed with the product. I am currently running on and HDMI monitor via an Amazon AV2HDMI adaptor($US15). The display is stable and crisp. Much better than what you would ever have gotten on a TV through a modulator back in the day. I originally used 74123's but I ended up using 74HCT123's because I was getting a little jitter, even though the image was correctly centered on the screen. I am delighted with the result.
