Great looking and professional kit.

Just to reiterate others comments. This is such a great looking and professional kit. No problem with the build, relatively quick with clear documentation. Not much more to say, other than I love it!

A Great Beginner Kit and a Great End Product

The HP Voyager series of pocket calculators are legendary and almost impossible to acquire for less than a car payment today. Even if you don't understand the draw of these devices, they are still incredibly useful sitting on your desk or traveling in your bag. They are far more convenient and far more capable than whatever calculator app is on your phone.

The kit itself is far beyond any expectations you might have at this price point. The PCB is clean and clearly silkscreened. All the components come in bags labeled with their values and reference IDs. This means someone with some assembly experience could easily build the entire kit without instructions. Even for a beginner, this project is easily solderable. All the components are through-hole and well-spaced. As long as you have a tip able to get in between the small-ish components, you should be just fine.

The (optional) front and back bezels are machined aluminum with both silkscreen and etchings. Assembling the kit on its own is straightforward, if a bit fiddly due to its size. The standalone kit results in a very usable and attractively utilitarian calculator. Adding the 3D printed "bumper" turns it into a commercial-quality device.

The assembly instructions are straightforward but a bit brief. You should read through them entirely before starting to understand the process. There are a few details that you will need to infer through the process of elimination. However, the build is completely reversible at any point, so any mistake should be easily recoverable. A P0 Phillips screwdriver is required, and a micro needlenose plier is strongly recommended.

Amazing calculator, and impressive product

I've always wanted an HP 16C, but I find them too expensive. I do a lot of assembly programming on vintage hardware, so this is the perfect calculator. At first I wasn't too sure if I would like a clone of my "dream calculator" but at this price I thought it was worth trying it out.

I received the package much sooner than expected, so that was a nice surprise (3 days to ship all the way to Canada). The packaging is great, and all components individually packaged and labelled by type. The PCB is great quality and nice design, and very clearly labeled, so finding where each component goes is very easy. The assembly instructions are very clear, containing very clear pictures and tips, so soldering the whole thing was pretty straightforward. I ended up using the aluminum front plate to perfectly align the buttons when soldering those. The tips in the documentation mention this, and it worked perfectly.

I wasn't sure if I wanted the 3D printed bumper since I've never seen a 3D printed object that looks good, but the bumper actually looks really good. Assembling the board with the aluminum back and front was very easy, and fit is great. It makes for a really nice little package. The printing on the back is a nice touch, and I think gives the same information as the original 16C has printed on the back. The front panel, with the holes for the buttons fits perfectly, with almost no gaps around the buttons, the side and the display.

The calculator worked on the first try, no problems there. The LCD is nice and contrasty, and it has custom settings for contrast and backlight (which the original 16C doesn't have I think).

The calculator seems perfectly compatible with the original 16C, at least for the things I tried, which included writing a simple program.

There are many sides to a project like this, including programming a perfect replica of a classic HP calculator, designing the hardware for it, case design, production of all the pieces of the case, documentation etc etc, and everything is of high quality. A very impressive product. This calculator has quickly earned its own place next to my Apple ][+ for when I'm having fun doing 6502 assembly.

Just great!

This kit is really impressive. The aluminium rear and front panels are beautifully made and have a superb finish. The LCD is first class with good clarity and a wide viewing angle. The backlight is nice and even. The included 3D printed bumper and 2032 cell holder really finish off the looks.
If you have experience with soldering, assembly is totally painless, particularly if you use the top panel to make sure that all of your switches are straight and level. You can also use the front panel to make sure that the display is perfectly positioned so that there won't be any nasty surprises when you finish assembly.
It took me about three hours to assemble mine and everything fitted together perfectly. All the parts are individually bagged and labelled and supplied in a sturdy cardboard box for protection. It was a real pleasure to build. I'm really pleased to finally own my first ever RPN programmer's calculator.

Stellar product!

I absolutely love, when a manufacturer gets it totally right.
This little calculator is a genius device both as 'consumer product'/'tool' and as educational object; it's delivered to you unassembled, but with components in individual, labeled plastic bags accompanied by a tiny, yet well-made instruction. Were I a computer-science teacher, I'd distribute this kit to my students, acquainting them with both the HP16c-functionality AND the sensation of 'I-made-this!'.
One note: When assembling, why not use the aluminium front panel as guide to ensure all buttons are aligned properly? I've managed to mess up two, and it's not easy to fix-it. Buttons not installed ab-so-lutely straight will catch on the front panel holes.
