This is a DIY project intended for enthusiast with advanced soldering skills to add NVMe SSD to the MacBook Pro 2011/2012. By default Apple only allow a maximum of 2x internal storage(SATA SSDs) to be connected to the SATA ports, so this modification adds the 3rd storage(NVMe SSD). With the correct Distribution Board, the PCIe port can also be connected to an external GPU(X-GPU mod) for higher graphic performance.
NVMe SSD is 6x times much faster(max +-3000MB/s read&write) than standard SATA SSD(max +-500MB/s read&write). For 2011 model, the Max NVMe speed is +-1500MB/s of Read & Write. NVMe drives are also known for its longer lifetime and higher TBW(TeraBytesWritten) comparing to SATA SSD. This modification also proves that PCIe lanes can be hijacked using the same principle, so we literally can connect any PCIe device(GPU, Thunderbolt 3, NVMe) to our Mac! Technically the same method can be used to newer Macs with Intel PCIe lanes.
We built it for fun, the original thoughts when this project started was just because we want to have an ideal laptop that we can use for ourselves; modular, upgradable, repairable; these models are known for its high repairability rate and its parts are cheap, so they're easy to maintain for everyday use for a repair shop like us. We also create it just to test our soldering skills and manufacturing precision.
To meet the current PCIe high speed signal requirement, our PCB manufacturer can't make PCB other than Green color, or else the design and signal constraints cant be achieved. If this change in the future we will certainly offer it!
For this specific model(MBP 15-inch 2012 & 2011), X-GPU will be connected through the X-Kepler port, so after soldering X-Kepler adapter, you need to connect IPEX cable from X-Kepler to Distribution board with external PCIe x8 port(right now DB for X-GPU mod is not available for public, only for NVMe is available)
