eMMC chips wear out, and recovery can be tricky.
Luckily, the console has a removable eMMC board.
It is encrypted, but still readable and writable as raw partitions.

When the eMMC fails it often becomes read-only or worse - corrupt.
I have recovered a couple broken consoles this way, it might help you too!

How it works

Almost any SD card reader can read eMMC chips. However they only access the main partitions.
After discovering a Realtek card reader with rtsx Linux driver in an old laptop,
I could read the boot0 and boot1 partitions too.

Hardware

It is fully open-source reader based on Realtek RTS5170 card reader and designed in KiCad.
Uses the same Molex 500913-0302 connector.

Software

Requires Linux and rtsx drivers to be installed.
Works out of the box with Ubuntu 20.04.1
How to build the required drivers for Raspberry Pi 4 is here.

Read and write speed is about 20MB/s. (USB 2.0)

Usage

sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0boot0 of=boot0.bin
sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0boot1 of=boot1.bin
sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=rawnand.bin

Disable read-only mode

sudo su
echo 0 > /sys/block/mmcblk0/force_ro
echo 0 > /sys/block/mmcblk0boot0/force_ro
echo 0 > /sys/block/mmcblk0boot1/force_ro
exit

I'll be using this to make it easier for me to fix bricked Switch units with corrupted eMMC data. I'll also look into ways to get this to work under Windows and eventually make the workaround public, if there's one to be found. Thanks!

Does exactly what it's meant to do

I don't really have anything to add, it works exactly like described, being able to dump the nand without actually using a switch console is super handy for backup purposes.

Wooooow!

Crazy this tool is absolutely a must have.
Impossible to save my boot0 and boot1 and my Nand with Hekate I put the emmc inside this tool three line of command and boom that’s it everything is on the computer and I can put it back on a new Emmc incredible thank you so much

Fantastic

In conjunction with the keys I dumped from my old Switch before it broke, I was able to extract several saves that don't support the official cloud sync service and get them on my replacement Switch, as well as one final "definitive" NAND backup in case I ever need it again. Indispensable tool, thank you!

Great Product

Shipping was fast considering where it was coming from and the current state of things. Works as advertised! I have only tested as far as connecting an eMMC to my computer and making sure I can read it, but I imagine at that point backing up and restoring should not be an issue.
