What is it?

It is a short-travel linear slide (10mm travel) which can hold pens, markers, crayons, or any other drawing instrument up to 16mm in diameter. The raised position is controlled by a standard hobby servo (this is the same method used in the EggBot and WaterColorBot robots), whereas the down position is determined by where the pen contacts the drawing surface. The pen can float to follow irregular surfaces.

Why did you make it?

When I was designing the AxiDraw® drawing machine (see elsewhere in my store, or the website at http://www.axidraw.com), I needed a convenient, compact holder for the pen. I couldn't find anything so I designed this!

I decided to sell the pen slide separately since it's something I've often seen attempted online.

The entire slide can be mounted with a single M4 retaining screw + washer from the front.

Up to 16mm diameter pens (held in two V-notches with a single screw)
Standard hobby servo actuator
Compact: 8cm high, 5cm wide, 6cm deep (excluding pen screw)
Slides on two ground steel rails
All parts machined from Delrin plastic
