What is it?

The minitel is a french great-uncle of internet that comes back frequently in retro computing projects. This well documented old guy has a peripheral port from which we can access to screen display and keyboard input, so it can basically be used for any terminal application. The semi-graphic mode also makes GUI development possible with 80x72 resolution and 8 colors grayscale.

This board is here to make reuse project accessible for most makers.

Why did you make it?

My past projects with minitel were always ending up as breadboard prototypes with lot of wires, external power supply and arduino or raspberrypi, etc. This kind of bulky delicate stuff is hard to take out of the garage and can dissuade software devs from working with. Well, here comes the idea.

The objective was to make a dev board: - as generic as possible, to support the widest range of projects, - accessible for the greatest number of people, being arduino IDE and micropython compatible with integrated USB port - self-powered and with a good form factor so that it can be used as a dongle plug and play on minitel which have power output on DIN port

An excellent product, delivered quickly !

I am very happy with the product ! The parcel arrived quite fast, in excellent conditions and I was able to connect it quick to my Minitel by following the good instructions on the website.
I had the Minitel sitting for months wiating for a retrofit with e.g. Raspberry Pi, this is even better !

Excellent product, a great way to revive some old Minitels!

The two boards arrived rapidly and well packaged.
In order for my computer to be able to talk to the ESP32 through the USB-C port I followed the steps described on the Hackaday project page.
I tried two different demo code from the GitHub page in description to tests both boards and the Pong and Chess game works really well!
It will take a bit more time to code something fun using this devices but it will only depend on me now.

The Minitel lives on!

Thanks to this nice gadget which is powered directly by the Minitel one can once again experience the French "internet before internet".
