What is it?

This open source project was designed by Mark Donners and dedicated to Thomas Edison. This Internet radio is based on an ESP32 Wi-Fi module. Software written by Ed Smallenburg. A Big Thanks goes to both Contributors.

This board is a 4 layer board and has many Surface mount components. Therefore advanced Builders should tackle this project as there are some SMD parts that need micro soldering.

Description

The Internet radio described here uses the ESP32 as well as a VS1053 module to decode the MP3 stream. A 2.8 TFT colour display to give some information about the radio station that’s playing. This display has also a SD card slot. Mp3 tracks on an SD card can be played by the ESP32-radio. Other types of display are also supported, including NEXTION. WS2812-RGB LEDs can be wired to the board and will work as an audio VU meter. LCD brightness is controlled by a potentiometer.

The preferences for ESP32-Radio are kept in Flash memory (NVS). You may change the contents of NVS with the “Config”-button in the web interface.

The radio also supports an IR remote and a rotary encoder to control the radio. The radio is fully configureable via the web page.

• The strongest available Wi-Fi network is automatically selected. Passwords are kept as preferences in flash.

• Heavily commented source code, easy to add extra functionality.

• Debug information through serial output.

• 2nd processor is used for smooth playback.

• Update of software over Wi-Fi (OTA) through Arduino IDE or remote server.

• Parameters like Wi-Fi information and pre-sets can be edited in the web interface.
